ending the polish pupils' story

  • This fairy tale is sent from Polish

In a cave at the bottom of Wawel Hill there once lived a terrible fire-belching dragon. This dragon roamed around the countryside and did whatever he wanted to. He ate sheep and cattle and scared the farmers so much that they didn’t let their animals graze in the field near the Vistula River. Many brave knights had tried to kill the monster, but before they could get close enough to him, he blew fire on them and they were burned to death.

The king wanted this dragon destroyed. He invited knights and noblemen to come and slay the dragon, promising that whichever one killed the dragon could marry his beautiful daughter and become king when he died. Many tried to slay the dragon so that they could marry the princess, but the dragon killed them. The people became even more frightened; they were afraid to leave their homes and the country became poorer.

One day, a young, handsome but poor shoemaker’s apprentice named Krak asked the king if he could try to slay the dragon.

Krak knew that the king and the other knights were making fun of him but he had to kill the dragon, because he wanted to marry the beautiful princess Eliza. Eliza and Krak were lovers but nobody knew. Eliza was a delicate girl with long wavy black hair and emerald eyes. She was a wise girl and liked to read books. She also liked to disguise as a villager. One day Eliza was in the town's library, reading a book and there she met Krak. Krak was a blond man, early in his twenties and liked to read and write stories. Eventually when they got to know each other, they fell in love. One day, Eliza revealed her identity to Krak, he hesitated at first but their love could overcome everything. Eliza knew how to kill the dragon. The secret was to chant a special spell by using Eliza's ancient sword. Krak learnt the spell and took her lover's sword. Finally, the day had come. Krak was both nervous and happy, knowing if he could slay the dragon he could marry the love of his life. He approached to the dragon who was fast asleep. "This is going to be easy." said Krak with a grin. But he was wrong. The dragon opened one of his bright yellow eyes. Krak stopped and started to tremble with fear. "Congrats, human." roared the dragon, his breath was hot and heavy. Krak couldn't speak, he was enchanted by the dragon's elegance. "You're the only one who had come this close to me. And I sense a strong determination coming from you. What a pity, you'll be dead soon." When the dragon moved his giant body, Krak held his sword, he was terrified but his love and will to be with Eliza was so strong that he continued: "You are not a good dragon, you should be destroyed! You killed my friends and our animals, you brought nothing but sadness to our country. You will not beat me! Never!" Krak's body started to glow up as he chanted the spell. The dragon tried to fly away but he got fat by eating so many people and animals. Krak swang his sword and pierced it to the dragon's heart. The dragon turned to ashes as Krak tried to catch his breath. When he got back , he was greeted by Eliza who was worried about his lover. But when she saw that Krak is alive and had defeated the dragon, they held hands and ran to the king. The king was so happy that Krak killed the dragon, he apologised and gave the biggest party the world has ever seen. After that, Krak and Eliza got married and the country regained its richness back, and they lived happily ever after.
