In the occasion of Global Washing Hands Day (20/1) we made a short project about how to protect ourselves from the germs and the unhealthy microorganisms.
The 1st part of our project is about keeping our hands clean and the 2nd part (due to next week) is about protecting our respiratory system.
OPERATION “CLEAN HANDS”
HOW MANY OF YOU WASHED THEIR HANDS TODAY?
Starting with that question we take the opportunity to talk with the kids about when we have to wash our hands and why. Also, how the germs stick on our hands and how they manage to get us sick. We start to write on a tableaux all that the kids come up with…
WHICH IS THE RIGHT WAY TO WASH YOU HANDS?
Let’ s make an experiment. Ask for three volunteers to come and put a little bit of olive oil and nutmeg dust on their hands. One of them wash his hands with soap and water, the second one washes only with water and the third one doesn’t wash his hands. Now they go to their groups and shake hands with. What are you observe? How many of you are “infected” with the “microorganisms”?
"You didn't wash your hands and now I am "infected" too..."
BRAINSTORMING
We talked about the experiment and what are they most impressed of. Pupils said that only washing with soap was effective and then we talked about the microorganisms. They are not all infective, but with touching we can be sick especially in winter time, because the germs tend to search for warm places like our hands, noses, mouths to live and multiply.
So when we MUST wash our hands? Pupils come up with the following…
- Before and after eating
- After the toilet
- After playing and after school
- After we touched dirt or animals
- After we sneeze, cough or nose whipping
- If we are sick or we mingled with someone sick
