The Castle of Cosenza: the octagonal tower

  • This is the octagonal tower of Cosenza’s castle.

Originally, the castle of Cosenza had four towers: two squared towers and two octogonal towers.

Today there is only one octagonal tower.

The octagonal towers were built by king Federico II of Svevia. He restored the castle in the XIII century when it was damaged from an earthquake.

Federico II was very interested in symbols and geometry. Indeed, the number eight is the symbol of infinity; it represent the link between the sky and the Earth.

Originally, the the tower of Cosenza’s castle was between 18 meters and 23 meters high.
