The Center of Language and Literacy is a part of the Department of Education and Youth in the city of Reykjavik. It was established in 2016 as a means to provide support for schools in Language and Literacy teaching. We are a group of eleven people who work together as a team. Our job is to support teachers and staff working in schools and leisure centres by offering consulting, professional development and continuing education. We are to ensure access for all teachers and staff in schools and leisure centres to professional development, consulting and support for professional work with language and literacy. In our group we have four Language and cultural mediators who speak Arabic, Polish, Spanish, Philippino and Kurdish. There are two consultants who help schools evaluate children‘s abilities and former school experience when they move to Iceland and start school. They are elementary school teachers and speak Italian and Norwegian fluently and one has a degree in Multimedia animation and has worked in making computer games. In addition there are four consultants, two for kindergarten schools and two for elementary schools, one of whom is a speech therapist.
