A9_Presentation of two national minorities

  • The Jewish minority in Split, Croatia

On February 16th our 7th and 8th graders visited the Jewish Community of Split. Our host Mrs. Ana Lebl, president of the Jewish Community in Split, presented rich and interesting history of the Jewish minority. Through their history we found out many interesting historical facts about Split. Many places in the center of Split remind us of their presence in the past. During the Holocaust, this small community went through hard times. The names of the victims are inscripted on the wall of the synagogue. Many lives were saved by the courageous citizens. For example, doctor Silobrčić who saved 20 Jews got a title "Righteous among nations". Also we had a discussion about the status of the Jewish minority at the present time. Today, community has about 100 members and they are satisfied with their position in the modern Croatian society. In the end, we concluded that citizens of Split respect the Jewish minority especially because the one of oldest European synagogue and the oldest Jewish cemetery of that type is situated in Split.„After around 2000 years Jews are still a strong essential part of life in Split.“ (Website of the Jewish Community in Split)
