  • Scoala Gimnaziala "Principesa Margareta" - www.scoala114.ro

The “Principesa Margareta” Gymnasium School  is a public school, which situated in Bucharest, Romania. There are 1176 pupils in 45 classes: 24 primary level classes (pupils who are 6 to 10 years old) and 21 secondary level classes (11 to 15 year old pupils).  The school offers quality services to the local community.  It respects the laws of the  Ministry of Education.
The children have different social backgrounds as the school is situated at the border between district four and district five five (two districts that are different from  economical point of view).  Some pupils come from families who have a high social and intellectual level and others come from poor families. The difference between the two categories can be seen in the fact that not all pupils attended kindergarten before coming to school and a big number of pupils who come from poor families have bad results and are at risk of school failure.
We also have 45 Roma pupils and 12 pupils that have special needs and benefit from an attending teacher. The school has to find solutions to create a balance between them and give each child equal chances to education.
There are 72 teachers in our school who teach the compulsory curriculum and also optional lessons suggested by them and chosen by parents and pupils according to their knowledge, skills and needs. The mission of our school is to offer quality services to the beneficiaries from the local community. Pupils are prepared to acquire the necessary knowledge and to develop specific competencies in order to integrate themselves on the labor market. To accomplish these aims, the school has developed strategies to help pupils acquire key competences that lead to  their personal development, higher self-esteem, social inclusion and active citizenship and to decrease early school leaving.

Agrupamento de Escolas do Fundão - www.esfundao.pt

In June 2012, our school has become an aggregation of several schools for students aged 3-18 which has enlarged the institution. There are 1573 students and 176 teachers. We have a large variety of student profiles as well as families. Pupils start here the kindergarten until they complete the secondary education, which means we offer an educational project during 12 years. Besides the basic 3 cycles of studies, a wide amount of courses in the secondary education are offered. The secondary regular courses vary from Sciences and Technologies, Economics to Visual Arts and Humanities. There is also an offer of vocational courses: Laboratory Technician; Electronics, Automation and Computers; Social Work; Health-care Assistants; Computer Programming and Web Design. Since 2013 the school also offers a second opportunity for the teenage students who, somehow, have lost their school route. This is a Vocational Training Program aimed at reducing the number of school drop outs. There are two main areas: Computer Operator and Commerce.  The vocational courses, which absorb 40% of the secondary students, have been particularly well succeeded as the local enterprises have often offered to employ the students during the training and we consider that the vocational courses are an area of specific expertise.
We also provide some opportunities for the students who aren’t well succeeded during the basic education to integrate special classes where the main subjects are reinforced. There are, as well, efforts to create a major connection between different subjects in several level of studies, as we believe that is important to promote the success.
As there are a considerable number of students with special needs, we would like to include some of these pupils in the project activities, since it’s a priority for us to integrate them and contribute for their active citizenship.
The school is located in a peripheral region, far from the major cities, in which the agriculture sector prevails. However, due to certain measures taken by the municipal authorities, some enterprises have been settling in the town and the number of people employed in the service sector in the areas of Technology and Computers is recently increasing. The school is trying to offer its knowledge in order to respond to this fact.

More often than ever a number of our students gets discouraged and we, as teachers we need to provide empowerment and reinforcement to them. S Our students came from all different areas of Athens and different backgrounds mainly middle class urban areas.  There families had been hit by Greece economic crisis. Quite a few  of them used to attend private schools. Now they face new difficulties and they have to cope with dramatic changes in their lives. They  complain very often for mismatch between their expectations, the school curriculum and the real everydaylife problems they are facing . These problems are considered as an important factor causing the phenomenon of the early school leaving for them who even though they have the potentials can not achieve high standards under the pressure of the problems they are facing.  Our school has a good achievement rate at the national exams each year and it is very important to work with those students that have a strong drive to succeed but become disheartened  and quit because of other problems.
