MARCH

  • March 22 - WORLD WATER DAY

    Teacher: Anita Čupić

    School: OŠ kraljice Jelene, Solin

    Grade: 2.b

World Water Day is celebrated every year on March 22nd. And we in our classroom paid a lot of attention to marking that significant date.
In the Croatian language class, we read and analyzed the song Vode kupačice. We got to know the properties of water in the Nature and Society class, so we performed experiments in which we used water. We met substances that float on water and those that sink. The color of the water was an incentive for us to realize the art task in the Art Culture class. We painted blue tones with watercolors. In the Classroom lesson, we drew good and bad examples of man's attitude towards water resources.

The first day of spring is also celebrated as World Forest Day. Forests should be given great attention because today they are globally endangered due to poor management, fires, disturbed water regime, insects, rodents, bacteria, fungi, air, soil and water pollution, acid rain, etc. Not to forget the value of forests we drew an unusual tree.

On March 22, he realized a project day in our school within the Eco School. The theme of this year's project day was Sustainable Development. Students need to be educated for sustainable development.

The goals of sustainable development strive to build a better future for all people on our planet.

Driven by the goals of sustainable development, students and teachers decided to take concrete action.

They planted a cypress tree in the school yard and in that way showed how important it is for them in what environment they live and that they are committed to preserving life on earth (15.goal ). They also cleaned the school yard where they play and hang out every day.

The project day was also an opportunity to mark World Water Day to draw the attention of all people to the importance of water conservation. They watched the educational video "Problem Solving and Decision Making". The video talks about the problem of polluted water. The students discussed the problems and possibilities of how to solve it and finally made a decision. They concluded that water should be protected from pollution and that water should be saved. After, they made posters on the theme of water, in accordance with the 6. goal of sustainable development (Clean water and sanitary conditions). The goal is to ensure access to drinking water for all people, sustainable water management and ensure hygienic conditions for all.

After making the posters, the students presented their work in groups and drew conclusions. Their message was “Appreciate and save water”!

The importance of water and its symbolism were also discussed in the religious education class. They solved word search on the topic of water.

The kids enjoyed the project day and all the proven activities!

    SDG 13 Climate action

Sustainable goal 15: Life on land

Elementary School kraljica Jelena recognized the importance of the action "Plant a tree, don't be a stump" and in cooperation with the local community decided to plant as many trees as possible and to emphasize the importance and of trees and greenery, especially in urban areas.

So we joined the week of collective planting of trees in Croatia in 2021 with the slogan "Plant a tree, do not be a stump!"

On Monday, March 8, we started the action in the school garden. Students and teachers planted olive, lemon, fig, rosemary and lavender trees in the school garden. We are happy to have contributed to improving our own environment.

PROJECT DAY “PROTECT THE ADRIATIC SEA“

Date: 22 March 2021. We had the Sustainable Development Project Day on the topic of Eco School and eTwinning project "Let’s live sustainable". Students of the 6th grade with their class teacher Dunja Knez and ICT teacher Antonija Burčul had a workshop on the protection of the Adriatic Sea.

The aim of the workshop was for students to gain knowledge about the threats to the Adriatic Sea and to explore ideas on ways to exploit the sustainability of the sea. The aim was also to learn English and Croatian phrases related to ecology and environmental protection.

Students worked in groups, talked about what they could do to protect the Adriatic Sea, and put suggestions for sustainable use of the sea on posters. They designed slogans in English with the help of old magazines and flyers.

The other part of the students made digital posters about the preservation of the Adriatic Sea in the web tool Canva.

The pedagogue forwarded them a link to the film Plastic Sea

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWFkoyiwzz8

After watching the short film, they answered questions in a Forms survey to get feedback on the adoption of knowledge about marine endangerment, which are the most dangerous types of decline, how long it takes to decompose and how that waste ends up in our food.

SDG 6 Clean water and sanitation

SDG 7 Affordable and clean energy

    SDG Sustainable cities and communities

Within the Project day in Primary school queen Jelena in Solin, the 8th-grade students and their teacher organised a workshop „How to make our school more sustainable?“

Students explored and analyzed sustainability issues and awareness of our school and engaged in problem-solving. They offered some effective and creative ways how tu make our shool more sustainable. Among other things, they suggested how to encourage students and teachers to recycle and organise garbage we produce in school, how to spend less energy and water and even how to produce our own energy. As a result, students developed a deeper understanding of environmental issues and the skills to make informed and responsible decisions.

SDG 17 Partnerships for the goals

The Project day of students of the class 8 E was conceived through the visit of teachers to Kučine and Mravinci, small places where students live.

In addition to developing empathy and togetherness, we also learned some possibilities of developing sustainable agriculture. Almost half of the EU's territory is agricultural land. Farmers not only produce high quality nutritious food for us, but also protect nature and take care of the environment. Farmers need to become "greener" and farm in a sustainable way. Sustainable agriculture, such as organic farming, is smartly used by natural resources and is fundamental for food production and our quality of life – for today, tomorrow and for future generations.

Living in a smaller place offers greater opportunities for the development of sustainable agriculture. The aim is to make students aware of the benefits of living in a smaller place and to be active participants in the world in which they live.

    "I am Water"

In order to raise awareness of the importance of water and its preservation, especially on the "World Water Day", students of the class 8C, primary school kraljice Jelene in Solin, together with their home teacher, created a book using digital tool BookCreator, with the title "I am Water"

We used a capital letter for Water, to show many perspectives, shapes and forms in which water surrounds us, as if the Water was presenting itself.

We had great fun making this book, and we hope you will find it interesting too.
