Celebrations in Greece

  • 6th December. The celebration of Saint Nicolas

In Greece the celebration of Saint Nicolas has nothing to do with Christmas! In fact, Saint Nicolas is the saint who protects the navy, the sailors, the fishers and whoever deals with the sea! Εvery coastal area and every island has a church  dedicated to Saint Nicolas.

    Christmas preparation!

And this is how we felt the Christmas spirit at school!

In Christmas Eve children -and adults- scurrying around the neighbouhoods and sing the christmas carolls. They stop in the houses, shops even in the buses and they ask "Shall we sing them"? (The carolls). The answer is "Yes. Sing them"  The children sing the carolls and the owners or the customers or the passengers give them money! The christmas carolls narrate the story of Jesu's birth!

In New Year's Eve children sing Saint Basil's (Santa Claus) carolls (following  the same procedure). These carolls talk about Saint Basil!
