day 5 - educational trip to Bremen

  • day 5: Educational trip to Bremen

    (Friday, 6th of May 2022)

Most of the partners had quite earliy flights back home. Therefore after a last walking tour at the sea side (with water being back because of high tide and nice sunshine) and a last evening together in a small restaurant called "Banter Ruine", it became time now, early in the morning, to say "Good bye!"

The Greek and the Slovenian team, though, had some more time and so they went, accompanied by some students and teachers from Wilhelmshaven, to Bremen.

historical esembly in front of the metropolitan church - the flag at the town hall is a witness of the neweset political development in Europe, signifying solidarity with the Ukraine

We visited streets from very different time and learned something about the long history of this harbour town at the shore of the river Weser - a city of the hanseatic league. The marked place gives evidence for medieval times and the fight between clergy and self-confident citizens of the trading city.

The Roland statue symbolizes the town privileges of a medieval town and the civic liberty. It faces the metropolitan church, the opponent, and is testimony of the weath and pride of the merchants who were member of the hanseatic league, a European union of trading towns. Here we took a group picture. - But what would be Bremen without the world famous "Town musicians"? This is where the second group picture was taken.

We moved on to "Böttcherstraße" ("cooper street"), a short street between the marked square and the river Weser. Its architecture is special, combining traditional local brickstone architecture with expressionism and art nouveau.

The "Schnoor" was our next goal - a quarter that has preserved its medieval character. Originally one of the poorer quarters with small houses side by side like pearls on a cord ("Schnoor" is a local word for German 'Schnur', meaning 'cord') it is very popular today full of small shops and cafés. So: Coffee time!

A walking tour at the river Weser, some time strolling around in the city centre, having some free time - and then it was time to go back to the main station: either for heading to the airport or for returning to Wilhelmshaven. But it was only a short parting: only a week and the Erasmus team would meet again in France!
