5.4 OUTDOOR LEARNING - Maria Baykova

  • Lesson 1 Outdoor teambuilding

    In our first lesson we used Team building exercises to develop a range of skills as:

    1. Communication - speaking and listening and non-verbal communication;

    2. Collaborative working;

    3. Creative thinking

    4. Leadership;

    5. Trust.

    We choose the teams and the leaders

    First activity "Cross the swamp''

    Aim: The whole of the group must cross the ''swamp'' without getting theit feet wet. Only use the equipment provided. Return to the start if anyone falls in the swamp. Finish with all your equipment on the other side.

    Second activity ''All abroad''

    Aim: Get as many people as possible inside a circle. No part of any person may touch the ground outside the circle. The group must be able to hold its balance for at least 5 seconds.

    All the time the pupils have fun. They have to solve problems, listen to the leader, speak each other.

    Lesson 2

    Environmental outdoor learning

    Our lesson began in the classroom with a discussion of how important is water to life of the planet. The children answered questions where the water came from, why it rained, where the water came from in the clouds and more. They were introduced to the water cycle in nature from a multimedia presentation.

    We organized the second part of the lesson outside. Through some activities, students were able to better understand the circulation of water in nature.

    Through pictures and hands-on activities, students understand the necessity of cycling for the life and importance of water as a resource.

     They were divided into 2 teams of 7 students.

    First activity

    Each of them takes on the role of the different stages of the Water cycle. Each student has a plastic cup, the first student has water in the cup. Following the Water cycle, they should explain what happens to the water in their stage to the other students. Using plastic cups, they demonstrated the passage of water from one stage to another. The practice and their arrangement in a circle helped the students understand why it is called the water cycle.

    Second activity

    Aims

    To arrange properly the water cycle in nature.

    Work as a team to achieve a common goal.

    To discuss the water cycle in nature.

    Again there are two teams. One team has pictures with stages of the Water cycle. Students from the other team must properly organize the steps of the Water Circle.

    At the end of the lesson, we evaluated students' games.

    Lesson 3

    Orienteering - first steps

    Aims

    To introduce the concept of setting a map and simple navigational exercises.

    We started the lesson with why maps are needed, what we use them for, and how to navigate them. The children realized that in order for us to be effectively orientated, we should be careful how we hold the card. We transferred the knowledge into real activity.

    The kids are working in pairs.
