We investigate is it parabola or it isn't?

  • 1. Does a rainbow have a shape of parabola or a circle?
    Investigate is it parabola, containing points A,B,C?

    Normal rainbows are created by interactions of the sunlight with low level rain drops rather than high altitude hexagonal crystals of ice.

    Why? Rainbows as coloured rings.


    These solar halos are caused by a very specific reflections and refractions of the sun's light with ice crystals located in cirrus clouds high in the atmosphere.

    2. Draw a fixed point (called the focus) and a fixed line (called the directrix) on the page. Then the parabola with this focus and directrix is the set of all points in the plane equally distant from F and L as shown:

    But looks can be deceiving! Not all U-shaped curves are quadratic.
    Famous mathematicians, James Tanton, in his work QUADRATICS wrote: 
    "For example, Galileo wondered if the shape of a hanging chain (like a rope between two poles in a barrier surrounding a museum exhibit or a section of hanging powerline) is the same shape as a quadratic graph. He suspected it was … but he was wrong. In the mid-1600s, scholars proved that the shape of a hanging chain is a fundamentally different curve.
    Let’s go for that deep and meaningful checking."
