INTEGRATION INTO CURRICULUM

  • HOW THIS PROJECT HELPED US

OUR PROJECT WAS DESIGNED TO HELP OUR STUDENTS FOR SOME PROBLEMS THEY ENCOUNTER  WITH WHILE PREPARING FOR THEIR LANGUAGE EXAMS THAT THEY WILL HAVE AFTER HIGH SCHOOLS.

THE LANGUAGE EXAMS REQUIRE A WELL-DEVELOPED READING SKILL, SO WE CREATED CHALLENGES FOR OUR STUDENTS THAT WOULD MAKE THEM STUDY DIFFERENT TEXTS ABOUT DIFFERENT TOPICS WITH COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS. AND ALSO, THEY LEARNT THESE TARGET WORDS IN CONTEXT INSTEAD OF MEMORIZING THEM, WHICH LED OUR STUDENTS TO LEARN THESE WORDS EASIER AND MORE PERMANANT WAY.

AS ANOTHER PROBLEM, SOME STUDENTS PREFER MEMORIZING THE WORDS BUT THIS WAY CAUSES OUR STUDENTS TO FORGET THEM IN A VERY SHORT TIME. SO, DURING OUR PROJECT, OUR STUDENTS STUDIED A TARGET WORD WITH MANY DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS SYNONYMS, ANTONYMS, FILLING  THE BLANKS, MATCHING WITH DEFINITION, WHICH CREATED A MORE PERMANENT LEARNING FOR THEM.

Curriculum integration involves active participation from students. This project aimed to overcome the confines between learning areas, making learning functional, and helping students to make sense of the whole picture of knowledge, encouraging them to see interconnectedness and interrelationships. According to the objectives of the project it aimed to develop in students skills such as: effective communication; capability of working in groups; grounded approach to problem solving; independent responsibility for learning; critical evaluation of literature; and sharing information and knowledge with peers.
Furthermore,it helped students in making connections between learning experiences, which occurred at the beginning of the project and continued throughout the project.

We integrated our project activities into our English lesson curriculum very well.Every month , we studied 3 texts about different topics, so we improved our reading skills and vocabulary. We developed our listening and speaking skills thanks to song activity. We also improved our writing skills with writing story activity.
Besides, my students had the opportunity to speak English apart from their classroom thanks to the webinars. That enabled them to develop self-confidence.

While improving their English vocabulary, all my students involved in the project, mastered and applied in their tasks, final products such as: Google Docs, Wordwall, Socrative, You Tube, Padlet, Yumpu, LearningApps.
Being a Physics Teacher, I involved the eight students in doing some presentations using Padlet, but also Web 2.0 tools discovered/mastered by them during the project: my students used in these presentations : Wordwall, Socrative, Quizlet and other Web 2.0 tools already known.
Using Web 2.0 tools throughout the project, allowed them to improve both communication and writing competences in English, and more to develop 21st century competences such as: responsibility and adaptability; communication competences; creativity and intellectual curiosity; social responsibility; information and media abilities, collaboration and interpersonal capacities.

The most difficult parts for a language class student in the university exam are understanding the long passages and the questions related to them.By means of this project we aimed at compensating this handicap. The students studied the passages in detail during the lessons and discussed them. They learnt Ouroboros,Hemingway, Pablo Neruda and Vivaldi and why people yawn. These texts provided the students a great opportunity to practice speaking skills and it was a good integration of literature, music, art, mythology into language. Thanks to the activities designed, the students practiced the specific words by having fun. While designing the activities, they learnt so many Web 2.0 tools that they would most probably never find a chance to learn during their school years.Furthermore, the stories written using the station technique was very useful for them to improve their writing skills. That was also good for their creativity.

When the project and learning outcomes of the English curriculum are compared, we can say that both were integrated with each other in activities during the project process. The project provided the students with learner autonomy through collaboration, interaction, and communication in a safe learning environment at our schools because the curriculum suggest that students get support and guidance from their teachers, peers, learning materials, and learning tasks, In this sense, our students under our guidance worked in collaboration and were encouraged to use the technology actively during the process. The students were in the center of learning process for all the activities. They learned by doing.
