Education in Finland and Estonia – Original Best Practices Benchmarking course - Helsinki, Finland and Tallin, Estonia

  • The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing

TRUST is the main thing in education in Finland and Estonia.

I took part in the seminar in Helsinki and Tallin. The course was organized by Euneos. Teachers and headteachers from all over Europe could observe lessons and talk about the curricula with the school leaders.

We visited Vierumaki school, Havusoki school, Varia vocational school, Tallina XXI kool, Gustaf Adolf Grammar School and Russian Gymnasium.

What impressed me most is the circle of trust. Students  can choose the place they feel comfortable and do their tasks there. It can be the floor, a corner under the stairs.. as long as they do what they are expected to do they can sit anywhere. I felt no pressure nor tension. Children are talkative and relaxed. Some of the best students are given tasks.. for example good IT students handle technology issues.  whenever needed.

No two schools have the same curriculum and people there work on improving their curricula every two years. They used to do it once in four years, but the constant need to keep pace with the changes in the modern world forced them to do it more often.

I also liked the way they revised for a maths test. All the classes had the same subject, ie maths, at the same time at three levels. Students could choose where to go and what kind of exercises to practise.

I met many colleagues. We shared our problems and ideas. I improved my English and I broadened my horizons.

    Erasmus+ ?

    Always
