A VIRTUAL VISIT IN THE MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF POLISH JEWS

In February 2019 our students took part in classes about POLIN - the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

Students could hear about the beginnings of the museum in 1995 to its creation in 2005 - how it was created thanks to the cooperation of the Polish government, local self-government and non-government organisations as well as individual and international supporters.

Our history teacher presented our students highlights of the Polish and Jewish history - history that is 1000 years long and had both light and dark sides. He talked about life in Jewish diaspories and the Holocaust.

The museum is a historical institution, but its aim is to influence the future relations between the Jews and other nations, face stereotypes and current threats such as xenpphobia and nationalist prejudices.

During the classes the teacher used information and images from the museum website: https://www.polin.pl/pl

    SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019

A VISIT IN A LOCAL MUSEUM

At the end of September the students from Zespół Szkół w Rudkach visited a local outdoor museum -“The Cultural and Archaeological Centre” in Nowa Słupia. Inauguration of the Cultural and Archaeological Centre in Nowa Słupia in the year 2011 resulted from the efforts undertaken to promote results of the research on the iron metallurgy and the Roman period on the Polish lands and the cultural relations between the Central Europe and the Roman Empire. The concept of the new centre covered the creation of reconstructions of particular structures and phenomena known from archaeological sources with a special focus on the results of research on the metallurgical centre in the Świętokrzystkie Mountains.  The Cultural and Archaeological Centre has very important value in our local and national history, tradition and culture. There, our students from Zespół Szkół w Rudkach could admire ancient Roman and Barbarian buildings. In the Barbarian area the students visited a cottage of a ‘goldsmith’, a ‘metallurgical’ cottage, a ‘bronzing’ cottage, a pit house and an amber workshop, a ‘blacksmith’s’ cottage, an umbrella roof over a slag-pit furnace, a ‘sauna’ cottage, a ‘fisherman’s’ cottage, a ‘weaver’s’ cottage. In the ‘Roman zone” they got familiar with ‘Hadrian’s Wall’ – part of the Roman fortifications and “Burga” – a watch-tower connected functionally with the Roman limes. After the visit the students worked individually, in pairs and in groups and prepared posters presenting the buildings, symbols and short descriptions in English language connected with the outdoor museum. Finally, the display in the school corridor was prepared where our students shared their experience with their colleagues.

    DECEMBER 2019

A MUSEUMHOLICS LESSON: A VIRTUAL VISIT TO THE MUSEUM -

    BRITISH MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

On 16 and 18 December 2019 our seventh-graders were invited to go on a virtual trip to the British Museum of Natural History in London, the UK. The lesson was conducted by Mrs. Agnieszka Jankowska, an English teacher. Students were also asked to answer the question: How to plan a trip to the museum?

During the lesson students were engaged in the three stages planned for museum visiting - an activity before the visit, during the visit and after the visit. Also, they could develop their ICT skills using smartphones and computers to look for information with Google search engine and then make PowerPoint or Libre Office Impress presentations.

    I. Before the visit activity: Students participated in a class discussion about visiting a museum - what is a museum. what can you see there, why are museums important, etc. Students also heard basic information about the British Museum of Natural History in London, the UK - its location, collectoin and hostory as well as its sections. After this introduction our virtual tourists decided on the sections they would like to visit.

II. During the visit activity: Students paid a visit to the museum online. They had to find the sections they had chosen and go on a tour of it online. They were asked to collect information about one item displayed in the museum and read about it.

III. After the visit activity: Students made presentations in pairs using either PowerPoint or Libre Office Impress. They used photos of the museum exhibits and basic information they had found on the Internet. Finally, they presented their works in front of their classmates.

The slides below present some images from students' presentations about the virtual visit to the British Museum of Natural History:

A MUSEUMHOLICS LESSON: A FAMILY MUSEUM

On 14 January our eighth-graders took part in a Museumholics lesson "Museum family" which turned out to be a touching experience fo all. Students gathered important family souvenirs and told stories from their family histories, origins and meaning of the shown items.

The exhibits for brought for the lesson included a watch, a locket, old school notebooks, photos of great-grandparents, a cross and prayer book, postcards and others. Students told stories about these souvenirs and stressed their importnace in the family history.

To sum up, the whole lesson was a great opportunity to talk about the past and learn some facts from the students' ancestors.

The lesson was organised by Mrs Agnieszka Cedzyńska, a Polish teacher.

    JANUARY 2020

A MUSEUMHOLICS LESSON: A LITTLE CLASSOOM MUSEUM

On 21 January 2020 our seventh-graders participated in a Museumholics lesson. Students brought family souvenirs to create a "little class museum" and recreate the times of their grandfathers by telling stories from the past.

Every student showed a souvenir and told its story. The souvenirs included old coins, medals, watches, postage stamps, sculptures, jewellery, books, documents, photographs and a lot of other interesting objects. All the students listened to the stories with great interest and asked questions about them, for example about their origins.

After the presentations, students chose a souvenir and story they found the most interesting and justified their choice.

The lesson was a perfect evidence for the fact that history is here and now. You just need to have your eyes open and not miss it.

The lesson was conducted by Mrs Bożena Jop, a Polish teacher.

    FEBRUARY 2020:

GETTING READY FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MEETING IN SPAIN

    The History of Al-Andalus

In February Polish students learned about history of Al-Andalus - the subsequents contests by the Muslims and Christians. They watched a film presenting the conquest of 711 AD which led to establishing the territory of Al-Andalus with Cordoba as the capital city and then the conquest of 756 AD which brought indepenence to Al-Andalus. Students also found out about the caliphate of Cordoba that was established in 929 AD and the cutural growth of the region. Soon, the caliphat split into smaller kingdoms which fought against each other and this afected their strength. In 11th century the Christians invaded the Muslim kingdoms - all but one in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212.

    The link to the film:

Watching the film about history of Al Andalus - part II

    with maps and discussion:

    The economy of Al-Andalus

In the next lessons we discussed the economy of Al-Andalus:

    a) the crops as well as some technical improvements such as irrigation systems or water mills,

    b) craftsmanship,

    c) commerce.

    The society of Al-Andalus

We talked about the major groups of the Al-Andalusian society - the Muslims and non-Muslims. We learned that the Muslim groups was divided into the Arabs, the Berbers and the muladies. The nonMuslims included Christians and Jews.

    The famous women of Al-Andalus

Fāṭima b. Zakariyya b. ‘Abd Allāh al-Kātib al-Shiblārī and Lubna were women known and respected for their skills. We had a closer look at Lubna's biography, too:

We read about Lubna on this website: https://mvslim.com/?s=Lubna

    The cities of Al-Andalus

With great interest did we observe the curious elements of the Al-Andalusian city - the mosques (the Islamic temples for worshipping God), souq (public market), medina (old town), baths along with the fortifications - the alcazaba (fortified seat of the city's governor), alcazar (fortified palaca or castle), walls and the adjacent arrabal (suburbs).

    Art of Al-Andalus

Finally, we looked at exampels of art created by the Al-Andalusian artists. We found the patterns extremely beautiful and extraordinary due their use of mathematics. We saw shapes such us circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, stars and octagons in the presented examples of mosaics and architecture.
