How to spot fake news

  • In the Twinboard below write some steps you can take to discover the verifiability of the news you read.

  • What can I do?

    Check the source

If you find a story on a website and want to know if it is reliable, the best way to check it is to see if that information is also present in at least one reputable media: the main newspapers (the broadsheet ones) or news agencies. This is a basic criterion in journalism: cross-check information using reliable sources !!!

    Media Literacy

If we are to be successful in assessing or evaluating the credibility of most news stories or sources, then we need to work on ourselves first. For example, we should build our own capacity or competence to do so. Media literacy is therefore vital for us all.

    Domain and URL

Pay attention to the domain and URL.

    Who is the author?

Looking at who wrote the article can reveal a lot of information about the news source. Searching through the author’s previous articles can show whether they are a legitimate journalist or have a history of hoaxes.

    Check the website

Check the URL names of pages that look suspect, making sure that it’s not a hoax site that is pretending to be a trusted source.

Look Out For Questionable Quotes And Photos

It’s easy for fake news writers to invent false quotes, even attributing them to major public figures. Be skeptical of shocking or suspicious quotes, and search to see if they have been reported elsewhere.

Check The Publish Date And Time

Sometimes old articles or events can return and lead people to believe they just happened

    Develop a Critical Mindset

One of the main reasons fake news is such a big issue is that it is often believable. It's important that you read rationally and critically.

See Who Else Is Reporting the Story

Check whether the story has been picked up by other well-known news publishers. If the information you have isn't from a well-known source, there's a chance that it could be fake.

    Check the domain name.

Does it look strange? Those ending unusual domains such as “.com.co” are fake news.

    How to spot fake news
    Examine the pages

Fake websites often do not have “About Us” or “Contact Us” pages, or have limited helpful information on them.

    Check the language

Look out for grammar or spelling mistakes. These could suggest that the site is not credible.

    Read beyond the headlines

Some headlines are sensationalised to attract more readers. Always read through the entire article before forming any conclusions.

    Check for it on Snopes

Fake news articles and hoaxes are regularly debunked on the Snopes fact-checking site.
