Painting Activity

  • Each country contributes four paintings and some simple information about each. All partners vote for the one painting that would represent the country in the project's cooperative story.

    1.Title: Hunting bears

    Artist: Theophilos Chatzimichail (1868-1934)

    Short description: There are hunters and dogs hunting bears among bare trees. One of the bears is wounded and there is blood running from the wound. The hunters are wearing Russian hats. The artist’s source of inspiration was a newspaper article.

    2. Title: Race in a stadium

    Artist: Unknown ( 1,700 BC) This is a painting on a vessel. We can see young men running. They are naked because that way they could exercise and compete better. They also believed that naked people looked equal.

    3.Title: Fisherman

    It was created some time around 3,000 BC. It is part of a fresco from the island of Thira (Santorini)

    4. Title: Girl untying her sandal (1973) Artist: Yannis Moralis Nude painting in the cubist style.

    Bitwa pod Grunwaldem/ Battle of Grunwald

    The AUTHOR of this painting is Jan Matejko. The panting was created in 1878.
    The artist painted the "Battle of Grunwald" to refresh the hearts of Poles. The victory at Grunwald symbolizes the power of the Polish nation over the Germans. It reminds us of the difficult past of our country from which we can be proud

    Pomarańczarka/The Orange Woman

    The author of this well-known painting is Aleksander Gierymski, The painting was stolen by the Germans during the war, recovered in 2010.
    The painting was created in 1880-1881 during the artist's stay in Warsaw. The picture shows a Jewish merchant, The woman has poor clothing, a headgear on her head, a scarf on her shoulders. She has Two baskets with oranges In the background, the roofs of Warsaw houses. The woman has a serious face. Her cheeks and wrinkles show sadness and powerlessness.

    Babie lato/Indian Summer

    The author is Józef Chełmoński. Babie lato was created in 1875 in Warsaw. The picture shows a young Ukrainian peasant lying on the ground holding a thread of Indian summer in her hand. On the left, in the background you can cattle and villagers. A black dog looks towards them.

    Maskarada/ Masquarade

    The author of this painting is Tadeusz Makowski . Maskarada the painting was created in 1929. In the foreground, we see a crowd of people dressed as clowns. One of them has a plate in his hand that spins on a stick. They have smiling faces. Some people don’t believe their eyes. The artist wanted to show the astonishment and the cheerfulness of the street circus.

    Son of Kalev (Kalevipoeg)

    The artist is Oskar Kallis. It was painted in 1914. In the picture there is hero names Kalev's Son or Son of Kalev. He is a giant hero from Estonian folklore. He is carrying planks. There is a beach, a sea and some rocks in the picture. Kalev's Son is wearing Estonian traditional clothes.

    Estonian bride (Eesti pruut)

    The author of the painting is Gustav Adolf Hippus. It was painted in 1852. There is a young woman in the picture. She is wearing traditional costume with a blue headdress. She is wearing lots of jewellery. She is holding a ring.

    Faithful guardian (Truu valvur)

    The artist is Johann Köler. It was painted in 1878. The is a girl sitting under a big tree. There is a dog next to her. The girl is wearing a yellow dress. It is summer.
