Creating a refugee story

  • We organized a meeting at the assembly hall in the Cypriot school. All the students participating in the project were there. Each of them used their mobile phones or devices to participate in a Kahoot survey. They had to create a collaborative story.

Here you have the questions they had to answer on KAHOOT. Click on the image to know the questions to be discussed.

And here is the story of Amin

"Somebody arrived in a small boat to a beach..."

We gave him a name: Amin. Pupils began to give ideas to build the story of that character. We tried to think about the sensations and feelings experienced when arriving at a place where he didn`t know anyone or anything. We also thought about the reaction he would have to any threat or danger.  When that teenager boy aged 16 reached the beach he felt very afraid and very hungry. Some strange noises scared him, he thought they were animals.

We tried to imagine who he could ask for help from. In case of going to a centre for refugees we began to describe the conditions of that place.  Another problem that Amin could have would be the ignorance of the language.

With these conditions we built the story:

"The first thing he did when leaving the beach was to look for help at a charity organization. He wanted to be integrated legally and socially. He eventually found a job, illegal of course. He wasn’t well paid for that but the most important thing for him was to learn the language within a month, which was the deadline..."

And now you can imagine how our story continues...

Later students were divided into mixed small groups in order to continue the inmigrant story. Each group finished it by their own and then told the story to each other.
