Ysgol Porth y Felin

  • Ysgol Porth y Felin is a primary, Voluntary controlled School of the Church in Wales and was established in September 1998 following the amalgamation of Ysgol Cadnant, Ysgol Bodlondeb and Ysgol Gyffin. The School is named after the impressive Mill gate entrance to the Walled town of Conwy. The school is in the historic town of Conwy and pupils attend from the town and the surrounding areas. We educate pupils from 3-11 years old. There are about 45 members of staff at the school (20 teaching staff). The school educates pupils through the mediums of Welsh and English. There is also a resource based class room at the school for pupils with moderate leaning difficulties form the surrounding areas. We educate about 350 pupils in a friendly, supportive and caring environment. All staff work tirelessly to ensure that our pupils attain the highest possible standards. We are very proud of our school and work constantly to provide exciting and stimulating experiences that raise standards for the benefit of all our pupils. The school's motivation to join the project is that pupils wellbeing is a priority within the school and nationally. We believe that all our pupils should be aware of the UN convention on the rights of the child and feel safe from discrimination and inequality. Children’s rights are all the things that children and young people need to make sure that they are safe, have the things they need to survive and develop, and have a say in decisions that affect their lives. Pupil voice and their contribution to School life is extremely important to us. One of the many contributions made by the pupil council was selecting our school motto –Believe, Respect, Succeed. In 2011 Wales became the first country in the UK to make the UNCRC part of its domestic law. The headteacher has been part of 3 previous European projects with different schools. He will coordinate this project and believes that it will benefit Ysgol Porth y Felin by broadening both students and teachers horizons and help them feel like European citizens. There will be a small team of 5 members of staff at the school that will manage the project, but all classes and staff will be aware of the work and partake in the activities. If the headteacher leaves the post during the project, the deputy headteacher will take over the role. Our school governors and parents will also be invited to take part in the activities to include the whole community. Our school will lead on the ICT aspect of the project as we have an experienced teacher that has expertise in that field.
