  • Proverbs across Europe - everyday wisdom for everyone

    Every culture has a collection of wise sayings that offer advice about how to live your life. These sayings are called "proverbs". 

    Proverbs are often borrowed from similar languages and cultures, and sometimes come down to the present through more than one language. However, almost every culture has examples of its own unique proverbs. Learning proverbs can help you to understand the way that people in other cultures think about the world. Let's see what proverbs are common in Europe. How similar and different are our proverbs?

    TASK

    1. Add some common proverbs in your language to the padlet below. Translate them into English literally and if it is possible add an English equivalent. Write a definition of its figurative meaning.

    2. Choose some proverbs in foreign languages and draw pictures illustrating their literal and figurative meanings. Upload the pictures to the padlet.

    3. Compare the proverbs in your language with ones in other languages. Write comments next to the proverbs writing how different or similar are their to your language.
