  • Hello!

We want to present some books about our town and war times.

'Monographien Deutscher Stadte' is a beatiful, extensive book that still can be valuable source of knowledge for contemporary past times research. You can read about pre-war times, people, entertainment, industry and find nostalgic ads of those days restaurants, photo studios, artist ateliers, cinemas, theatres and so on...

Another interesting suggestion is reading Horst Bienek's books such as "The first Polka','September light', "Times without Bells'.

Being a real Gliwice inhabitant, as a young boy he went through tragic events of January 1945.In his books he managed to depict life of Gliwice citizens before Russian troops entrance and right after the end of the war.

'The last year, the first year' is a contemporary book with intersting reports of 1945 and 1946 times.German citizens were forced to leave their houses and departed to Germany.Polish citizens were resettled from eastern boundaries...this town started to speak a new language and changed its name from Gleiwitz to Gliwice.
