About LICEO SCIENTIFICO STATALE "MICHELE GUERRISI"

  • The "M Guerrisi" Science High School is a college of sciences, mathematics and physics, founded in 1972 and is named after a local sculptor, Michele Guerissi. It is located in a small town in southern Calabria, in the center of Gioia Tauro, an area still underdeveloped, although it has the largest port of the Mediterranean Sea. The school is adequately equipped and has laboratories for teaching all subjects: physics, chemistry, multimedia and foreign languages laboratories. We have a conference room, a planetarium and a gym. We also have extra-curricular activities to deepen different pupils' notions or abilities: mathematics and foreign language communication (students attend special courses for obtaining international certificates in English: Cambridge, Trinity, KET, PET FCE). We have a European law course, a music orchestra, theater workshops, painting and sculpture, graphic art, modern dance, entrepreneurial projects, ECDL courses. Our high school, with a computer profile, can add value to the project through the IT expertise of teachers, namely in programming, including Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), with applications in science teaching disciplines. In the past, thanks to the European Structural Funds, our best students have had the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial and cultural spirit by exchanging experiences and journeys abroad in a project. There are 800 students enrolled in 31 classes and 60 teachers. Students come from a poor economic area with a high unemployment rate, a negative effect of the economic crisis. In addition, our students are not accustomed to interacting with foreigners, economic and cultural difficulties do not allow them to travel abroad to visit or learn. Our students are not familiar with the EU concept or that they are European citizens. All these aspects have prompted us to participate in this project. We also want to develop practical skills, student knowledge, European citizenship and citizenship skills to succeed in the European labor market. The leader of our team is Arianna Sturniolo, an English language teacher with experience in European projects. The teachers who will be involved in the project are: Rosario Mandaglio (English teacher), Girolamo Calogero (Maths and Physics teacher ), Sergio Zappone ( PE teacher and IT expert ), Domenico Curinga ( Science teacher ), Dr. Teresa De Franco (Computer Science Professor), Dr. Angela M. Colella and Chief Accountant Franca Ciardulli. All teachers have a qualifications that enable them to become project partners, are flexible, creative, and innovative.
They have completed Erasmus + and eTwinning projects. If the coordinating lady will no longer be able to get involved in the project, one of the project team members will be able to take on this role, most of them having the necessary skills.
