    Story 4

                    HOPE

Chapter 1 (by Annemarija Irbīte and Anna Šeila Ruhmane- LV)

Every story has its own beginning, and so does this one. For Hope Westlake it all started when she was 5 years old and playing with her older brother Ethan, who was the captain of the boys’ football team. Even at the tender age of 5, Hope had fast legs and reflexes, so she could easily outrun all the other kids.

As she got older and watched her brothers’ team win almost every game, she felt a burning desire to be a part of that world. To feel the excitement and adrenaline, whilst being on the field with her team. But she never told anyone about it. Not even her brother. For some reason, she felt ashamed for liking a “guy sport”. At her school they didn’t have a girl’s football team. To be honest, most girls wanted to be ballet dancers or singers, or designers, but she didn’t feel like it was her destiny. She tried her best to fit in and be “normal”, or whatever that’s supposed to mean.

One day in 8th grade Hope saw a poster hanging on the wall at her school. The poster said: “Tryouts for boys’ football team will be held on Wednesday at 9am in the schools’ gym”. She looked at the poster for a while and thought to herself- why can only boys play football? Shouldn’t it be for everyone? Her friend Aubree saw her looking at the poster and came by. “We should totally go and check it out! I bet there will be some cute boys”, she said enthusiastically. Hope smiled unwillingly and agreed, although she wasn’t interested in boys, like, at all. But Aubree was her friend and she went along with it anyway.

Wednesday came around and a crowd of excited boys were filling the schools’ hallway. Other students gathered in the gyms’ podiums. Hope and Aubree sat down in one of the first rows. Whilst Aubree was checking out the guys, Hope was looking at the floor and thinking. “Is something worrying you?”, Aubree asked. “I-I was just thinking…would it be cool if I tried out for the football team? I know it’s for guys and all, but we don’t have a girls’ team at our school, but football should really be for everyone, right?”, Hope finished her sentence and looked at Aubree. She looked surprised and said “I didn’t know you liked football, but why don’t we have a girls’ team? It’s the 21st century! I’m pretty sure they won’t let you try out though, because it is for the boys’ team”. Hope felt relieved yet sad.

After the tryouts she went home. Whilst having dinner with her parents, she couldn’t get the thought of a girls’ football team out of her head. The gears in her mind started turning until she decided- I’m going to make it happen! I’m going to make my own team someday!

Chapter 2 (by Inas A., Léa L. and Hazal K.  FR-)

The next day Hope went to see the boys’ football training. Of course she wasn’t alone, a lot of female groups attended the training: not for football, but for the handsome muscular boys. Except Hope, she was the only girl who had come to learn new game techniques, the warm-up exercises and especially see how Mr Albert was teaching the exercises or how he could stand up: things that a man knew.

At the end of the training, when the girls had left away with the boys, Hope went to see the man. She wanted to tell him about her idea of orientation. The man, who was an old man, replied to  her:

“Sorry Hope, but I can’t support you in your choice. You know,  a team composed of girls would be a little weird, whatsmore coaching it... You’ll never get there. Football coaching is a boy’s job. Try to find a female job: become a nurse, for example”.

Hope was desperate, she went back home and started crying. For the first time someone didn’t want to help her. Of course Aubree wouldn’t agree too, but Hope saw some hope. She called her friend and she told her about her bad day and the discussion she had with Mr Albert. Aubree said to her:

“Stop thinking about this idea, it is silly! You should organise auditions…” and in one second, Hope had an idea. She thanked Aubree, hanged up the phone and she started drawing.

On the next day, students discovered posters placed everywhere at the high school. “ YOU ARE KINDLY INVITED TO THE FOOTBALL AUDITIONS TOMORROW AT THE STADIUM. GIRLS ONLY!”

Only a few hours later, Hope discovered that most of her posters had ripped off: in the corridor girls were giving her a dirty look and pointing their fingers at her. It wasn’t the worst thing she had suffered on that day; indeed she found herself in the head teacher's office. Hope had been called into the head’s office to give her arguments about these auditions and to know who gave her the right to put posters in high school. Initially he was quite angry against Hope, but some words still remained in her mind when she left the office “Hope, you're the first girl who wants to make this high school a modern high school, creating a girls' football team: I congratulate you!”.

Hope, who had been worried before she entered the head-teacher’s office,  came out relieved and motivated. She had faith this project.

The audition’s day came. When Hope arrived at the stadium, she was surprised by what she discovered...

Chapter 3 (by Iris Mata and Joana Weber- pt)

At first she felt so confused, she was not understanding what was happening, the stadium was full of girls getting ready for the start of the audition for the girls football team. She never thought that there was so many girls into football…

The audition proceeded greatly and she found out that there was actually some really good athletes on her school and they were enough to start a football team. She was excited to start the trainings and so did she on the following week.

But the first training was harder than she expected, as soon as Hope met the girls in the stadium she realized that the stadium benches were full of guys. At first she thought ''it's okay , they are here to look into some beautiful girls'' but when the training started she figure that it wasn't the case. The boys were there to make fun of the girls and to be rude with them.

She ignored them at first but as the trainings were going on week after week the boys were still there being annoying and eventually some girls gave up from the team because they couldn't take those comments.

She had to do something in order to get the boys respect…

Chapter 4 (By Ilias Liakopoulos, Thanasis Paraskeuopoulos and Anastasia          Guri - GR)

She was certain that trying to talk to them wouldn’t pay off so instead she decided to hold a meeting with the girls from the team. They gathered in the locker room before leaving school. Not all of them showed up, as many girls had probably left the team, but there were enough in number to have a proper team.Hope stood on a bench and said: “You have reached this far and you are really thinking of quitting? We have made such a progress and honestly I believe that we can actually beat the guys” at that point all the girls expressed their doubtfulness and that was when she took out her notes and started pointing out the progress of each of her teammates. They realised that she quit right and all agreed on her suggestion of taking part in the end-of-the-year football tournament.

They had only two months in order to prepare so they started training really hard for hours every day.It was the last week when the girls were feeling confident enough to beat the boys’ team

Eventually the big day had come when the two opponents stared each other across the field. As expected, the guys made fun of them but that didn’t take away their courage. The referee blew the whistle and the game started. In the 20th minute girls scored a goal and one minute before the end of the halftime, guys scored as well. In the second halftime guys scored another goal around the 60th minute and after on girls tried to score but they realised that it was more important to increase their defense. The game ended with the guys beating.Hope gathered her teammates and congratulated them on their performance. As soon as she stopped speaking the guys approached them and congratulated them as well and apologized for their behaviour.the girls’ team appreciated their move and accepted their apologies

The next year, after both girls and boys had spent their summer playing football together, the boys helped the girls organise their team and improve themselves. Sometimes they would even train together and take part in lots of tournaments.

After they graduated, everyone left football behind but not Hope. She went to a sports Academy and became one of the best football players in the Academy. It was the last year when she decided not to become a football player but a football coach in a team. So when she finished her studies in the Academy she immediately organised a female team which fulfilled her dream; Women playing football without being ashamed as she felt when she was younger.
