    2nd Primary School of Serres-Greece

Our school is the 2nd Primary School of Serres. Serres is a town of 85,000 people in the North of Greece. There are 25 Primary schools in Serres.

Our school is very old. The first part was built in 1930 and the second part in 1966. It has too floors, sunny classrooms with big windows, an assembly hall-theatre room-gym(all in one), a computer room, a music room, an Art room, an English language room, a special room and a large office for the headmaster and teachers. The playground is large with tall trees and a court for football, basketball and volleyball.

There are 160 students (from 6 to 12) and 20 teachers. 10 teachers have got a class and 8 teachers teach various subjects: English, German, Drama, ICT, Art, Music and Physical Education. There are 2 special teachers and 12 students who need special help for learning problems. There are 6 grades. There are 3 terms which last 3 months, students receive evaluation at the end of each term.First and second grades take only oral evaluation. Third and  fourth grades take evaluation letters from D to A and fifth and sixth grades take evaluation marks from 5 to 10.                                                                                                                                                                                    School year begins on September 1st for teachers and September 11th for students. School year finishes on June 16th for students and on June 21st for teachers.                                                                                                                                                                                        Every morning school bell rings at 8: 15 and we gather at the school yard for morning prayers. There are 6 school periods every day.One period is 45 or 40 minutes. There are three breaks. At 1:15 the bell rings and we take the bus home. We have lunch at home. Some students stay at all-day-afternoon school until 3 o’ clock.
Our school is special because the majority of the students are from the Roma minority. We are very proud we participate in this Erasmus project “Mirror, mirror on the wall” with Germany, Cyprus and Finland. We like writing, reading and receiving letters and cards from our friends.
We think Inclusion and Active citizenship are very important. We do activities against bullying, about children’s rights and how to help and include students with disabilities.                                                                                                                                                                          We join activities in the community. Decorating Christmas trees in the town, actions in the town library and sports activities are some of them. In May our school joins in the Students’ Week (Mathetokosmos)-a week decicated to Art for Primary Schools. This year we will perform a play from Greek Mythology. In June we take part in ECO Festival, a week with actions for the Environment.

Greece has created a folder ABOUT US in the MATERIALS - Files Section where you can find a Power Point Presentation of the 2nd Primary School of Serres . The two links invite you to a journey in our country(Part 1) and in our area-customs(Part 2)
