The Primary School of Agios Dometios III is a public elementary school in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. It is situated in a socially disadvantage area. It is an area on the "green line" the line that divides Nicosia in two parts: the Greek Cypriot area of the Cyprus Republic and the Turkish occupied area. Therefore it is considered a "low cost" area, where the rents are cheaper and hence it attracts a lot of immigrants as shown from the pupils' population: Its 87 pupils are allocated in 6 classes- one for each grade of the elementary school. 40% of its pupil’s population has both parents coming from 10 different countries (e.g., Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Philippines and Jordan), 25% of the population has one parent originated from abroad and only 35% have both Cypriot parents. It is a multilingual school facing a great challenge to accommodate different cultures, languages, traditions and address the different needs of these pupils and help them acquire basic skills in all the subjects of the curriculum.
The school has six classrooms and classes for Art, Music, Science and Technology, Computers, Special Education and Speech Therapy and Event Hall. There are also the offices of the Principal, the teachers and the secretary.
The staff consists of 10 teachers: 7 of them teach as class teachers having to teach all the areas of the curriculum, 1 part time music teacher and 1 part time teacher for the physical education. We also have a teacher for special education needs that comes to school two days of the week and helps 7 pupils that face difficulties in the academic area. A speech therapist also visits the school twice a week to work with 6 children.
Our school emphasizes the creation of a positive atmosphere of mutual respect, aiming at the peaceful coexistence and creative interaction of the children.
