First mobility in Coventry (UK) - Joint staff training

  • The first mobility was held in Coventry from the 7th to the 11th November.

It was a Project Meeting and a joint-staff training at the same time.

    This is the report:

From 7-11 November all partner schools met at Howes Primary School, Coventry for the first project meeting and the first staff learning activity.
The programme was very full and staff had the opportunity to gain a wide range of skills to help in all future project activities.
The first day was a full day of training delivered by the Go-Lab team. This was to give staff an understanding of how to use virtual labs to deliver science lessons. There was also time to use the resources to begin planning lessons.
On the second day, a professional science presenter led a day of training linked to a number of STEAM issues. Staff learnt various techniques to engage children in STEAM lessons. We also had the opportunity to reflect on how to develop inquiry-based learning in STEAM subjects.
On day three we spent the morning working with Diana Bannister from Wolverhampton University finding out about how to optimise learning spaces and how to develop future classroom labs. In the afternoon we had a session with staff at the National Science Centre in Leicester. We were able to consider how to use learning outside the classroom in STEAM education. We were also able to work with the Faulkes Telescope team.
On day 4 we considered progression in STEAM from primary education through to university. To facilitate this we had a planned visit to Oxford University.
On the final day, participants visited a science museum and an art gallery in Birmingham to enable us to start making links between science and the arts.
All participants found the learning activity very useful and will be able to use the information to plan STEAM activities in their own schools.
