Our week in Serbia

  • DAY 1

Early in the morning, we started our trip to Serbia in front of our school in Dobrovo. A minibus drove us to the airport Jože Plečnik, Ljubljana. We flew for one hour and when we arrived in Belgrade, a bus took us to Primary School Mića Stojković, Umćari. Their eTwinning group was already waiting for us and together we had lunch in their school canteen.  After that, we had presentations of our schools and countries. To end this day, we had a national evening where we presented our traditional local food. Then our host families came to pick us up and this is how we finished the first day.

    DAY 2

At school, we started playing basketball at half past eight and finished at half past 9. Then we ate something and went to the chemistry classroom. There, we did some experiments. After chemistry, we had biology where we planted some flowers. For lunch, we had “čevapčiči”. After lunch we hung out a little and then watched a movie till our host parents picked us up to take us to our Serbian homes.

    DAY 3

On Wednesday, we took a bus from Umćari to Topola, where we visited the First Serbian Uprising Museum. Then we went to Oplenac - St. George's church, where the family of the Karađorđević dynasty are buried. Below the church, there is a small museum, which used to be King Peter's house. There we saw the telegraph, which ‘started’ WW1. After that, we went to the royal wine cellar. We left Topola and went to Manasija and Ravanica monasteries. Then we arrived back to Umćari and went home to our host families.

    DAY 4

We started the day with some interesting workshops. After the workshops, we visited the municipality of Grocka. People greeted us in a very friendly way and they had a very nice welcome speech. We were given symbolic gifts and were invited to lunch. The lunch was on a raft restaurant on the Danube. When we finished eating, we went the oldest traditional house in Grocka. We discovered that there are many things that are the same in our traditional houses. After this, we went to the archaeological site and museum of Vinča. Then when all this ended, we went back home to spent some more time with our families.

    DAY 5

Friday was our last day in Umćari. We came to school with our suitcases already packed for Belgrade. This day was dedicated to different workshops – cookery, art, geography. What I liked the most was the singing. It was amazing that all the Serbians learned a Slovenian song. But then it was time to say good-bye. Our hosts families were so kind to take us to Belgrade. We were sad we had to leave our Serbian friends behind but were truly looking forward to discover the beauties of the Serbin capital. We stayed at the hostel called The White Owl in Skadarlije. It was great! We finished a good day with a great Serbian dinner in a nice local restaurant.

    DAY 6

We woke up into a beautiful Saturday morning with a welcoming sweet scent coming from the hostel’s kitchen. Our schoolmates were making pancakes! After a hearty breakfast we set off to meet teacher Danijela at Republic Square at the ‘horse statue’. She spent the morning touring us around Belgrade. She showed us Tito’s grave in the Floral House, the Church of St. Sava, Nicola Tesla’s Museum and she walked us through Tašmajdan Park.  Unfortunately, Alen started feeling sick on Saturday so two of our teachers took him to hospital in the afternoon. We continued our exploration of Belgrade without them- we visited Kalamegdan and Knez Mihailova Street- but didn’t quite enjoy it, because we were worried for Alen. Late at night, we found out that he had to undergo surgery because he had appendicitis.

    DAY 7

In the morning, we packed our stuff and cleaned our rooms in the hostel. Then we went to  Knez Mihailova Street, which is famous for shopping. We had some time to look around the shops and buy some souvenirs. After that we went to see our friend Alen, who had surgery one day before. When we arrived, we had to wait because the hospital was full and the rooms were quite small. We had to divide in few small groups. Each group followed the other until we all saw Alen and wished him the best of luck. He was surrounded by our and Serbian teachers.  When we left the hospital we went back to Knez Mihailova and went shopping one more time but we didn’t have a lot of time because we had a plane to catch. We left Serbia without two members: Alen and our teacher Damijan, who waited with Alen in Serbia.

    DAYS 8, 9, 10

I stayed in Serbia longer than my friends did, because of my appendix. The pain in that part of bowls started on Saturday morning. The pain escalated until lunch. Then I threw up three times. After the teachers saw my pain, they drove me to hospital. The doctor said that he would operate on me. I was operated on Saturday at eleven o’clock. On Sunday, I wasn’t allowed to eat anything so I slept all day long. On Monday, I got my first breakfast after a long time. I had yogurt and bread. I didn’t feel much pain. I had mashed potatoes for lunch and dinner. I also had visitors. My new Serbian friends and their teachers kept me company. I was also in contact with my parents and my friends as I had Wi-Fi in my room. On Wednesday I was finally able to leave the hospital and teacher Damijan and I flew home.
