Composer Nikos Skalkottas

  • Let's enjoy a piece of Greek classical music:

Epirotikos (1933), a folk dance from Epirus (Northwestern Greece) that inspired composer Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949).

Skalkottas was born in Chalkis on the island of Euboea, or Evia. He started violin lessons with his father and uncle at the age of five, three years after his family moved to Athens.

His music fully reflects its cultural roots in all its aspects, including the mystical and non-temporal dimensions of Greece.
