Mokoš

  • Basic Information

    One of the most famous Slavic gods is Mokoš. On Balkan she is also known as an old woman or gammer. She lives in the mountines far away from the living world. She has a lot of beautiful horses, and she keeps them for herself. . She is mentioned in many Russian fairy tales as three old womens that are having many identical attributes. When there is no one around she knits misterious string of a life.

                                                                                            

    Myth

    However, when strong warrior gets lost in the mountin and has to finish great tasks, she has to offer him one of her horses. So she is mother of all gods, and horses are Earth's gift to everyone that finishes all tasks that are given by

    her.

                                                                                       

     Vocation

    Slavic goddess mentioned in the primary chronicle, protector of women's work and women's destiny. She watches over spinning and weaving, shearing of sheep, and protects women in child birth. Mokosh is the Great Mother, Mat Zemlya.Mokoš was the only female deity whose idol was erected by Vladimir The Great in his Kiev sanctuary along with statues of other major gods (Perun, Hors, Dažboh, Stribog and Simargl).Mokosh probably means moisture.
