Easter traditions in Cherkasy, Ukraine

  • Many countries have a tradition of baking Easter bread, but despite this, each country has its own special tradition of baking and decorating Easter bread. Easter bread is probably the most delicious part of the food on the table, that’s why I love it for its beautiful, delicious top layer, made from whipped protein and decorated with a variety of sweets.  In my family we bake Easter bread on Thursday, prepare meat rolls on Friday, and dye and decorate Easter eggs on Saturday.

In the evening or at night, people go to church to bless Easter bread and eggs, but in the Easter basket we also have meat, cheese, vegetables, salt and sometimes wine.  In the morning, when people come home from the church, people gather at the family table.

    Easter eggs

In Ukraine we have Easter eggs too. I am going to tell you about some ways of decorating them.

First - the egg called Pysanka.

The egg is decorated with traditional written symbols with wax and dyes. Each region of Ukraine has a particular feature in Easter eggs. Pysanky has survived in Ukraine thanks to the masters of the older generation in many ancient centers of this art form.

    Krashanka

One-colored eggs. Use a hard-boiled egg in the husk, which then becomes a yellow-brown color of varying intensity. Sometimes they are tied with parsley leaves that leave light imprints on the shell.

Most often colored eggs are painted in red.

    Krapanka

The technique is similar to a painted Krashanka , only the places on the shell, which should remain

unpainted, are covered with wax instead of drawing patterns 3 an Easter egg.
