11th November Belgium

  • “How do we celebrate”

Hello, we are Yara and Eva. We've chosen 11th november.

11 November it’s Armistice Day. Armistice Day is the day on which we recall the end of the first world war. We also celebrate Saint Martin’s day. Saint Martin is called after holy Saint Martin. At the age of 15, he had to join the army. His parents weren’t Christians but he chose by himself to become Christian and was baptised at the age of 18.

Saint-Martin is celebrated in some regions of Flanders. Saint Martin rides a horse through the city and throws sweets towards to the children.

In the evening, children take a walk with self-made torches. They sometimes go from door to door and sing a song. In exchange they get candies.

The celebration is not well-known as it is only tradition in some specific regions.

Did you know they prepare a special cake for this occasion which is called Saint-Martin's cake? It’s a special cake for one person.

Yara: " It's a very nice day, especially for children. They are enjoying it and they get candies."

Eva: " I love this day, my brother and sisters love it too. It is less known and that's a pity."
