5_3 France: work with people from La Baraudelle

  • Throughout this project, we are going to do some work with cerebrally handicapped people from "La Baraudelle", a local institution hosting disabled people. Some of the documents uploaded in this section are in French, because they show the work done in the French school in "non-language" lessons ...

    December 2015:

We were first supposed to have an introductory visit with 8 of our students on November 16th (International tolerance day), but we had to cancel it because of the terrorist attacks which took place two days before.

We finally managed to take the students there on December 14th.

Justine, Orlane, Nina, Amélie (from class 3B) and Margaux, Sarah, Thomas and Clément (from class 4D) first explained a few things about our project to some of the residents. They had prepared a Powerpoint presentation:

Then we visited the place. It's huge! And we discovered all the clubs and activities the residents can take part in.

You can see photos in our forum.

We have agreed to get back in touch in January, to start organize some common activities (creative labs, sports events ...).

    February 2016:

Some residents from La Baraudelle will come to our school on Monday, February 22nd for creative workshops.

In order to get ready to welcome them, the students (14 volunteers from 4D and 3B) have met for an hour, to think about the most important things to think of, to take their handicap into account. The work was run in French, but here is a short summary of what they have thought about:

    - Think about ways to access our school with wheelchairs, and stay in rooms on the ground floor.

    - Organize a virtual visit of the school (they have planned to use the video they have created for you guys ...).

    - Organize the room in a nice way, so that people in electric wheelchairs can move around easily.

    - Make sure that we welcome the group warmly, and that we do not show any lack of respect...

    - Try to help our guests if they need us to.

Here is the work in French. You can also find photos in the forum.

    February 22nd, 2016:

6 residents from La Baraudelle, together with two members of staff and one of the residents' father,  came over. Our students were eager to meet them / see them again! They had organized the room so that the wheelchairs would go through easily, they had prepared a "virtual" presentation of the school (using the video some of them had created for you) and two of them went to welcome and guide the minivan through the grounds.

We created 6 groups, each composed of one handicapped person and two students. The aim was for them to create a collage about the notions we work on in our project - tolerance, difference, respect. Everybody was very attentive to the others' opinions in the groups, everybody was willing to work together, and in the end, we ended up with 6 nice posters. We had planned to have a competition, but the teachers were not able to choose the winners, so everybody received a diploma, created by two of our students.

We all had a quick snack together before the residents left, and we've already decided to have another event soon, in La Baraudelle this time ... You can see a lot of photos in our forum, as usual ...

    April 21st, 2016:

A few of our students from 4ème went to La baraudelle again, in order to discover adapted sport. They have practised using a wheelchair. Some of them will help and guide our partner students in a similar workshop, which will take place in May, during our meeting in France. You can see a lot of photos in our forum!
