My grandfather couldn't celebrate christmas because he hasn't got money and my grandmother could celebrate it but they didn't buy too much food cause they weren't rich. They bought chocolat, chicken, potatoes... And their presents were ragdolls and cars of wood. They were more trees and less urbanization, so they could be in the forest in christmas and they were more decoration, more lights, today it is decorate less.

Photo taken by my grandparents in 1960 at a concert celebrated on Christmas day. They sang carols and songs from the time when people used to hang out with friends or meet new people and say poetry about the environment. Already in these times there are not so many traditional festivals since people usually celebrate parties of another type leaving behind our traditions.

Christmas in Gran Canaria has changed a lot, for example 50 years ago people did almond nougat and now there isnt a lot of almonds in the island so they can´t make almond nougat anymore. My Grandparents didnt celebrate christmas because they were poor, they only ate cheap food.

The Christmas in Canary Islands has changed a lot by the influence of the climate change, there are lots of things that we could do before and nowadays we can’t. For example nowadays we are throwing a lot of rubbish to the seas and oceans so the seafood is going to be less abundant in Christmas, and the seafood from now on is going to be less tasty because the oceans are being poisoned and all the seafood is being affected by this problem.

when my mom was a little girl (cristina and Aimara 3ºB IES bañaderos)

when my mom was a little girl she helped my grandmother with the christmas's dinner and my uncle grandfather went to gather chestnuts.when my uncle grandfather went to the home of my mom, the cousins and the uncles of my mom they were sitting in a big table and one of the uncles of my mom played an old instrument and the rest sing christmas songs.
My grandmother cooked the chestnuts while the family ate the seafood that my granfdather fishing and the mutton of my grandmother and my mom prepared

Tania Santana, Dorian Peña. IES Bañaderos 3B

At Christmas time, the Canary Islands enjoy the celebrations linked to this time of the year with greater or lesser attachment to the religious root and with characteristics similar to those of any other Spanish region in some cases or quite different in others. The photo is the "Tajaraste del Niño";, perhaps one of the oldest traditions known in the Archipelago and has, like so many things of folklore, rural origin. The main motivation of this artistic expression is to pay tribute to the Child God through this music and collective dance cultivated in the western islands. As with many of these "child dances,"; the performers are mostly men, although sometimes women can lead the singing voice in an additional recited piece

(Sabrina and Yassira) IES Bañaderos Cipriano Acosta 3ºB

Meetings with family and friends arrived in the city, evenings around the fireplace playing with the children in the houses.Together they placed the tree and the nativity scene, and they had dinner, they shared stories. All this has changed a lot since we do not go to the countryside as we went to collect things to decorate the nativity scene, since now we usually buy plastic items, although there are families that maintain this great tradition.

Alejandro Pérez González 3ºB IES Bañaderos

My grandparents celebrate christmas but a small dinner because they didn't have lot of money. His presents are not very expensive, the presents were a doll , a toy car...

Christmas fifty years ago were more different than Christmas now. One of the causes is climate change. 50 years ago, climate change wasn’t such a big problem. There was less pollution. Now, seas are more polluted than 50 years ago, so eating seafood is more unhealthy: fishes, shellfishes, and the rest of sea animals eat plastics that people throw to oceans.
One of the big difference between Christmas now and Christmas in 1969, is the food abundance, in those times there weren’t the same amount of natural food than now.

Christmas in the past Ismael 3B

I was talking yesterday with my grand dad and my grand mom of the christmas in the past. They told me the christmas was very differnt than nowadays, I can say the christmas in the past was all the family going to the house of the grand daddys to eat and celebrate, talk, eat, etc...With this we can say the christmas in the past was with any one types of tecnologies. Nowadays depend the family goes to the grand parents house to celebrate or go to a restaurant but always if you see familys nowadays all the family is with the mobiles. In conclusion nowadays is very different than in the past.

My family 50 years ago they met the 13 brothers to eat in a litle house but now it isn´t like this . Becouse mi famili live in diferent places .
50 years ago Santa Claus don´t exist.
Now a days temperature is higher than 50 years ago.
And now my family buy the meat but before my family was breeding pigs and cows to eat but now a days it is imposible becouse the climate was change.
And 50 years ago it use to snow but today it is almost imposible to snow

    Lucía afonso 3ºB IES. Bañaderos

Christmas in the Canary Islands has changed a lot in the last 50 years. Before Christmas Eve was celebrated in one or two houses throughout the village, so the neighbors dined together. There was enough confidence among the neighbors to do this, which today does not happen. Each family brought what they could offer, if someone had cattle (usually goats) they took a plate of meat, if someone had a harvest, normally they usually brought ''gofio'' (our typical corn flour). And after dinner the tradition was to sing carols together.

Kilian Hernandez Cabrera and Jorge Melián Mendoza 3ºB IES Bañaderos

At present, the most part of the people use and put false trees in their houses( trees that are made of plastic ).This is very sad because, 50 years ago, all people used real trees( they went to the forest and take one for their house or bough them) And do you know why don´t we use real trees at present?, because we don´t have enough trees for every body, because of the fires and the massive deforestation. We are praying for stop all this tragedys .50 years ago, all the familys met and ate with their neighbours, friend and whoever. At present, we hardly ever do this, because of the technology and the mobile phones, game consoles...

    CHRISTMAS

The Christmas of our grandparents were very different from ours.
In comparison their Christmas were more difficult because they had fewer resources. Our grandparents had a fish broth for dinner, that they themselves fished. For dessert they ate sweets. Now at Christmas we can eat more variety of food, such as seafood, sirloin…
The type of gifts has changed a lot since formerly mothers buy gifts and in the past they made them themselves. For example, my grandmother made my mother´s doll. Also, in our Christmas today we have all we need.

    CHRISTMAS IN CANARY ISLANDS

My grandmother has told me that she celebrated Christmas making a nativity scene with some Canarian figures that came in a magazine and decorated her house with different plants and leaves that they found when they were hiking. In addition, she used moss and elechos to make nativity scene forests.

But now because of the climate change the different plants that they used to collect are disappearing and at the same time the different and diverse eco-systems of our beautiful islands.

    Mónica and Rumén, IES Bañaderos

When my grandmother was very young she went to Christmas Parades like this, with people disguised as the wise men and riding horses. Nowadays, the Parades are a little different and modern, now there are trucks decorated for Christmas, the wise men use camels to move and in general the Parades are bigger. One of the only things that are like in the past is that there are page-boys and page-girls that take letters from kids asking for presents. Before the climate change, it was really cold in Christmas and it was rainy all the time. Sometimes my grandmother couldn't go due to cold. Usually she got the same toy painted in a different color and just some new clothes.

    Oliwia dual Poland

There was more snow in december. In the 190's was realy cold winter. In christmas in the 1970's there was snow but now the is normally no snow in christmas.

    Julia - Dual - Poland

People had less money and there is less snow now. Now it doesn't often snow on Christmas day.

    Winter once vs Winter now...

Winter in 1981 had 20cm snow. In 2019 winter has no snow on christmas.

Abenohara y Sofía IES Bañaderos 3ºB

My father’s family were smaller than my mother’s, but they also celebrated the Christmas. They ate in family, but they didn’t have many food resources. They ate something easy to cook and then they stayed awake until early morning listening to the radio.
Nowadays, we don’t have any problems with the resources. We can cook easier, we can go to other places, and we have more presents than fifty years ago.
But there is a problem. The global warming is present. Years ago, we had a lot of snow and the weather was colder than now, also we didn’t have lights decorating houses and now we do. This is a problem of shortage of resources. If we go on doing the same things, we will have a big ecological problem.

IES BAÑADEROS Ruth RM y Adriana JM 3ºB

Our family celebrate Chritsmas the same as they did long time ago, execept the presents and the food. 50 years ago, they bought the food at the market and nowadays we buy at the supermarket in a massive way, this produces the exploitation of animals, this is so bad for the enviroment because of deforestation.
Long time ago Christmas ilumination was poor, now each town has their own ilumination; this produces light pollution which can disorientate night birds and doesn’t let us see the sky.
Fifty years ago the presents were not the same, they were one or two simple presents and made with recycled materials, for example: a car, it was made with four tune’s tins, a board, two axles and a large stick.
Before, we posted a “Christmas” and now we send a message. This creates a dependence on the technologies, and it harms the enviroment.

    Cristian 3ºC

The Christmas now is better than before because it is not a tradition 30-40 years ago. Now we can give a lot of presents and before we can give only one, this is better for the world because we envolve less presents, and we spend less plastic. Also, they didn´t do the Christmas dinner, now we can do it.

Pablo Santana y Carlos Caballero 3ºC

Christmas in Gran Canaria is so cold, because the temperature is so low .Here it doesn´t snow except in the summit.Old the partys the families meet for dinner,Christmas dinner usually eat beef, pork or seafood. We have three meal Chistmas,New years eve and New night.
Seven days later the wise men come our house and they give us a lot of presents.

winter in poland in 1970 is difrend because
    snow-more snow than toodey
    comunism-difrend live style

    food-no much to eat

Winter in Poland 50 years ago was different than today because there was very little food, more snow, a lot of soldiers went on the streets and very little gifts because the people didn't have a lot of money.

    Maks Dual Poland

For my grandparents Chrstmas /winter was very different because:
in communism it was difficult to buy food and presents .
there was more snow in the winter .
They didn't buy food in shops, they made everything.

    Yeray Senra 4A1º

Well, from this summer to this Christmas I have noticed that all the time it has been of a temperature more or less the same less in winter than some days it has started to rain a lot and the weather has changed a bit. In Irurtzun many years ago I remember that it was snowing and I was going to play with my friends and the snow covered my knees.

    Christmas then and now (Poland)

Christmas 20 years ago looked completely different . There was more snow , the winters were freezing cold , with even -25 C and there was less consumerism .There were very few products in the shops , 90 % of which were local products . Getting citrus fruits or any foreign products was very tedious and often ended up being unsuccessful. Despite this , people were very creative and usually prepared meals at home using their own products. That's why there was less chemistry in the food . The products weren't transported far , so the environment was less polluted . There was a lot of snow in those days at Christmas .

Christmas then and Christmas now (Mara Galán IES JCB)

In the past the winters were colder (around under zero degrees), there were more fog, they were more snowy and also they could have freezes. The rains also were more expanded and less intensive. Nowadays the winter are so much different.

Nowadays we celebrate Christmas with our family. We have dinner all together in our grandmother’s home. We usually eat soup, meat and seafood for dinner. After dinner we open our presents. In this time of the year we pollute a lot because of the fabrication of our presents and Christmas decorations.
When my grandmother was a child she celebrated Christmas too, but in a different way; they formed a female choir and they sang in front of their neighbours. After this they went to have dinner with their family. Finally they went to the church at 12pm to hold the “Misa del Gallo”, a especial mass for that day.

    Andrea and Saúl

Before only gifts were made for the day of kings, which was celebrated one or two days before returning to work. Christmas dinners of yesteryear were more forceful and now lighter. It is also true that in the old day a family could only afford turkey, seafood or lamb once a year. Before there was only nougat of the hard or the soft, now there are many flavors and we have even come to know specialties from other countries such as Italian breadttone or chocolate advent calendars.

    Rayco Marrero 3ºC

My grandparents didn´t celebrate the christmas, beacause they didn´t have a high level of life and they couldn´t eat meat regularly and they didn´t received more than one present in christmas.

    Guacimara and Cathaysa Moreno 3ºC

Christmas has changed in the last years.
We are going to talk about our grandparents experiences.
When my grandparents were children, Christmas wasn't celebrated because the people were poor.
Father Christmas didn't exist but the Three Wise Men brought only one present.
In the present we are luckier than our ancestors.
Now we have a big dinner and at Christmas eve the Father Christmas brings us a lot of beautiful presents. We celebrate with our family and it is a special day for us.

Adán Castellano y Nuhazet Cabrera 3ºC

The cristmas of our grandparents were very boring because they didn't celebrate. They haven't any money. Are very poor they only sayed good cristas

Paola and Paula IES Bañaderos 3ºC

When our grandparents were younger they never had problems to celebrate Christmas. They usually met with their families in christmas eve and decorated the christmas tree like we do nowadays. The only difference is that their presents were handmade instead of bought, due to this, currently, we pollute more than our grandparents did 50 years ago.

Winema Suárez y Amanda Rodríguez 3ºC IES BAÑADEROS

Christmas in Gran Canaria has changed a lot. About 60 years ago there was no celebration of Santa Claus and there weren't so many gifts. My grandmother and her family used to meet at their house and have dinner on the 24th night and sang some carols. On 25th they would meet again and have the rests of the dinner for lunch. Now my family and I celebrate Santa Claus and we have presents on the 24th night.

    Massilya Moussaoui,IES JCB 4ºA1

My mother told me that when she was young the weather in this ages were more cold and snowed more than actually. Also another differences is that rained less compared to this periods and also that the winter or the cold weather lasted longer than actually. And old tradition that my grandmother told me is that usually at this christmas time they cooked with all the family together cookies and desserts to the familiar dinners, usually the 24th.

    Xabier. IES Julio Caro Baroja

I was talking yesterday with my grand dad and my grand mom of the christmas in the past. They told me that the christmas was very different than nowadays, because in the past there were no cell phones or other technologies. In conclusion it was more fun than now because now you can see your whole family with the mobile instead of talking about how it has been this year.

    Lorena Agachi IES JCB

50 years ago, my family celebrated Christmas with family reunions, dinner and fun but I feel like Christmas has turned more into a comercial festival and it's not as traditional as it used to be when my parents were younger. Before, the kids went out with their friends to play with the snow but nowdays, it's difficult to find snow in Christmas season. I think that the real Christmas spirit is falling apart as the years go past but in my family we try to remain traditional and have fun.

Beatriz Caldaras, IES Julio Caro Baroja 4ºA1

From what I was told, 30 years ago, there were not as many parties as now and people used to be more united because they used to be a lot together, there weren't as many decorations in the street as now. As telephones did not exist on those times Christmas Posts, were sent by post, for the same reason, families used to met all together and had a very good time talking for hours!
It was much colder and it snowed more than nowadays. I think that nowadays, Christmas is a beautiful time of the year because I see all my family, we have technology and we can communicate by phone. I think that even though technology might have set aside us from some points of view, it also has its positive effects, keeping all of us together even with a lot of kilometres that separates us.

Seasonal snow is an important part of Earth's climate system. Snow cover helps regulate the temperature of the Earth's surface, and once that snow melts, the water helps fill rivers and reservoirs, fields in many regions of Ukraine, especially it`s Sothern part, where we live. Changes in climate can affect how much snow falls and influence the timing of the winter snow season.

    School 10. Marhanets. Ukraine

Latest 20 years there is less snow in winter especially last 5 years there is a little snow for 1-2 days in winter. The winters aren’t frosty, only some days during winter month are a little frosty. Earlier the summers were hot but it wasn`t crazy heating and the winters were frosty and snowy.

I was talking with my grandmother and she told me that before in christmas was very cold outside, and it snowed a lot. In winter, our families chat and play games at the stove. But now we can't do that. You ask why? Because seasons are badly affected due to global warming. In the past, our elders called the day of the year "Bocuk Day". This is a local saying.
