TWO PARROTS PERCHED ON A TREE

Drawing is a very important expression tool for children. In very early ages, many children can express through a drawing what they can not express in words. A drawing can also reveal information about the maturity of children, their way of seeing the world, how they organize space …; and even aspects of their psychology.
The next activity is based on challenging the children’s ability to express themselves through their drawings. To do this, they are asked to make drawings of ideas or concepts difficult to draw.

I share the drawings of two children in first grade and two children in second grade. They were asked for four drawings. 1: two parrots perched on a tree. 2: two parrots perched on a tree. It is very cold. 3: two parrots perched in a tree. It is very cold. It’s night. 4: two parrots perched on a tree. It is very cold. It’s night. They are in Salamanca.

To look for more spontaneity in their answers, the idea is thrown and there is little time to do the drawing. For example, we say: “We are going to draw two parrots perched on a tree. We have five minutes.”

Generally, to represent ideas such as  “night”, they use  symbols such as the moon and the stars; the wind and the snow to represent  “cold”; and for Salamanca, we can see attempts to draw the Cathedral or  Casa de las Conchas.
