TOVE JANSSON (1914-2001) is the most widely read Finnish author abroad. Tove was not only a writer but also an artist and a cartoonist.
Tove’s most remembered as the creator of the Moomins. Books depicting the Moomin characters and their adventures have been translated into about fifty languages.

MOOMINVALLEY
The Moomins live in harmony with nature in an idyllic and peaceful place called Moominvalley. The largest building in the valley is the Moominhouse, and its occupants welcome all visitors from the both the valley and afar.
A river runs through this beautiful valley, which lies between the sea and the mountains, including a range called the Lonely Mountains. A path leads from the Moominhouse to the seashore, where the Moomins have built a small bathhouse. The Moomins love the sea.
As autumn approaches, the Moomins prepare to hibernate. By the time Moominvalley is carpeted in snow, the Moomins are already in a deep sleep.
MOOMIN CHARACTERS
The Moomins
Moomintroll is a spirited troll with a keen sense of adventure and fun. He is enthusiastic, naive and extremely good-natured. He is in love with Snorkmaiden.
Moominmamma is the mother of Moomintroll. She very rarely gets cross and takes even the most distressing circumstances (such as the arrival of a comet, or being washed away by a flood) in stride. Moominmamma is almost never without her handbag, which contains essentials like woolly socks, tummy powder, and bark.
Moominpappa became an orphan in his younger years and is a somewhat restless soul who left the orphanage to venture out into the world in his youth. Moominpappa has settled down and is determined to be a responsible father to his family. He is almost always wearing his black top-hat, inside which is painted, “M.P. from your M.M” to differentiate it from all the other top hats in the world. Moominpappa also lived on a ship with three Hattifatteners for a few days, observing their behavior.
THE MOOMINS’ CLOSE FRIENDS
Sniff is Moomintroll’s immature friend. He is a small animal of unknown species, though he is somewhat like a mouse, and somewhat like an aardvark. He is one of the few characters who is interested in money, and is always on the lookout for another way to get rich quick.
Snufkin, Moomintroll’s best friend, ventures south every winter and returns in the spring. Snufkin is an adventurer and a vagabond, admired by those who are small and shy. Snufkin wears old green clothes and a wide-brimmed hat that he has had since birth. He lives in a tent, smokes a pipe, and plays the harmonica.
Little My is a small, determined and fiercely independent Mymble. When she wants something done, she does it straight away. She is very aggressive and totally disrespectful, but can be a good friend. She has a brash personality and says exactly what she means, without caring if others see it as rude.
Snork Maiden, Moomintroll’s fair lady friend and admirer. She does fall in love with others sometimes, but returns to Moomintroll before things get too serious. She has blonde hair and sports a golden anklet. She changes color according to her mood, with her baseline color described as pale yellow. Snorks are almost identical to Moomins except that Snorks come in different colors (Moomins are white) and have hair on their heads, and their skin changes color depending on their mood.
Snork is Snork Maiden’s brother and also Moomintroll’s friend. His character is obsessive over details, rules, and protocol.
