Istituto Comprensivo 'Card. A. Casaroli'

The ‘Istituto Comprensivo Card. A. Casaroli’ of Castel San Giovanni is composed of six schools in the two municipalities of Castel San Giovanni and Sarmato, in the province of Piacenza (Northern Italy). There are two infant schools, two primary schools and two lower secondary schools for a total of about 1500 learners and 170 members of staff, recruited and paid according to the guidelines set at national level. There are also 20 special need outsourced assistants, who work for a cooperative company appointed by the Town Hall. 

The Institution is not located in a particularly economically or socially disadvantaged area, even though the recent circumstances of the widespread economic recession and the continuous arrival of migrant families (especially from Morocco, Tunisia, Albania, Latin America, Eastern Europe, India, the Philippines, and China) testifies to the presence of difficult situations.

Special courses directed to students with specific problems (such as orientation courses or courses to avoid early drop-out for pupils living in disadvantaged social conditions) have been activated for some years, as well as courses in Italian as a second language for newly-arrived children of immigrants. The student population of foreign origin accounts for about 40% of the total of enrolled students. There is also a quite high percentage of students with disabilities or with special educational needs (at least one pupil in each class). Two members of staff are usually appointed each year to supervise and implement the school policy towards foreign and special-need children.

The institution is subject to the RAV quality system in use within the Italian educational system, and has recently updated the school's vertical curriculum, to ensure a smooth transition across the various school levels involved (infant to primary, and primary to lower secondary).
