Extra Activities

  • This section of our project covers extra activities. They are the result of ideas that came up during our meetings or something suggested by our students. In many ways, they complement our main activities.

    Etwinning and Multiculturalism - Madeira

Getting the word out about what our students accomplish through etwinning projects is very important. So we organized a short presentation to show our school community what eTwinning and the project REACH was all about.

Below you'll find the video of the presentation and written version of it.

Christmas at my house - Madeira

Here are some of the texts the students created to share what they do around Christmas and New Year's Eve.

    Christmas Time Interviews - Madeira

While we were going about the Christmas voicethread activity (check the Celebrations Galore page) we thought it would be a great idea to get more input from some of the tourists that visit our island. So we decided to go downtown and interview those who didn't mind answering our questions. It was a chance to learn more about other people's traditions and a wonderful opportunity to practice English in a real life situation.

    Field Trips - Madeira

The project has given us the opportunity to learn more about our own cultural heritage. It has been great!

    Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias

Located right in the centre of Funchal, this theatre was built in 1888 and it has become a landmark in Madeira’s arts and culture scene. During our visit there our tour guide told us about the history of the theatre. We visited the stalls, the backstage and we even had the opportunity to try a series of acting exercises on stage. When we got to school our assignment was to create drawings of the different parts of the theatre and write a short text about what we had learnt and what we had liked best.

    Museu Monte Palace

Going to the Museum Monte Palace was a great adventure! We took the cable car to get there. It was a bit scary for some of us but it gave us a chance to look at our town from a different perspective. When we got off we were met by a tour guide that walked us through the Monte Palace Museum which, according to its brochure, is "an ideal exhibition space nestled within the beautiful surroundings of a tropical garden." We visited the Museum's three floors, two dedicated to sculptures and one that displays a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world. Then we were shown the gardens, the tile panels placed along the walkways and its many sculptures. After the visit we were asked to create a presentation about the museum.

Assembleia Legislativa de Madeira / Museu de Electricidade

We visited our Legislative Assembly. Our tour guide told us a bit about our political history and gave us a brief explanation about the legislative process while showing us around the various parts of the building. We were also given the chance to go into the parliament chamber and watch the debates. To be quite honest we all thought our representatives acted a bit like us during classes - some were paying attention, some tried to talk out of turn, some were distracted and others were just being disruptive.

On the same day we also went to visit the Museu de Electricidade. Again we were met by a tour guide that walked us through the exhibition and told us all about the electric power distribution in our island. We only have one electric power provider in our island so it was interesting to know how the company started, its importance for our economy, and the changes it brought about to our everyday life. After the exhibition we tried a series of challenges related to the creation and storage of electric power. It was great fun.

Museu do Brinquedo / Museu Madeira Story Centre

In the beginning of December we visited 2 Museums. The Museu do Brinquedo displays over 20 thousand toys and it was a great way to learn about our history and culture since the type of toy created reflects the customs of the society that created it.

The Museu Madeira Story Centre goes into the history and culture of Madeira Island in a fun and interactive way and this time our history teacher David Leça was our tour guide. He helped us understand the exhibition and told fantastic tales of our ancestors. We really enjoyed it!
