Last Tuesday September 26th, students of María’s school visited a very interesting place: the CEDEFO (Forest Defense Center) of Vélez Blanco. There they knew all about what a fire is able to do in a forest: trees and plants are burned and destroyed forever, animals who lose their homes and cannot escape the flames of fire, and even populations that are threatened by the fire and its inhabitants have to leave their houses to be safe.

Everyday firefighters are prepared in case they get a fire alert in our forest. They showed us tools that are used in case they have put out a fire, as spikes and blades; but what most caught our attention was the truck. The truck is full of water and with the hose they can access the place where the flames are taken place. In addition, one by one we try to handle the hose.

Finally, the most interesting activity was to see them in action, simulating a fire alert. We saw how the pilot put up the helicopter and we could see it inside. Then firefighters simulated that they were cleaning the mountain to put out the fire, while the helicopter was collecting water from a raft with the "bambi", which is a big bag that can hold 1000 liters of water. Suddenly, we heard a siren from the helicopter and it dropped the water that had collected in the bambi.

In conclusion, we learned that it is very important to take care of the forest, because we lose a lot of plants and animals and it takes too much time to regenerate. What’s more, it is also very dangerous for firefighters who work in their extinction.
