  • When we were preparing for our project, we decided on a blend between landmarks, traditions that you commonly see in Sweden as well as things or people that Sweden is famous for.

    Here I will select a few of the things we found out more about that I would like to share with you all.

    Lunds Cathedral

    The cathedral of Lund opened the 1st of September year 1145. It's 55 meters high, 85 meters long and 30 meters wide. Over 700,000 people visit the chatedral every year. It makes Lunds cathedral the most visited cathedral in Sweden. In the Cathedral's towers there is a total of five church bells and one carillon.

    The smörgåsbord

    A smörgåsbord, is a Swedish buffet with lots of different kinds of food. It's a table with many plates and trays. Some of the food that are included on a smörgåsbord are meatballs, bread, herring, shrimp, eggs, different kinds of cheese or salmon. Some of the foods are very cold and some of them are warm. There are also desserts like fruit salad, cheese and biscuits or apple pie. The smörgåsbord started in the late 1800s. It started as a starter but now it's the main course. It turned to a main course in the 1900s. A smörgåsbord in english is "smorgasbord". A smörgåsbord is very similar to what the Swedes eat at Christmas, Easter and midsummer. The word "buffet" comes from France.

    Alfred Nobel

    Alfred Bernhard Nobel was born in October 21 1833 in Stockholm, and he died on the 10th of December 1896 in San Remo, Italy. He was a Swedish chemist. Alfred Nobel invented the dynamite and he started the Nobel Price. Every year there is a dinner, the Nobel dinner. The dinner is on the 10th of December in Sweden, Stockholm.

    Glimmingehus

    Glimmingehus was built in 1505. It is located in Hammenhög. At Glimmingehus you can do things that people did in the Middle Ages. There is also a museum at Glimmingehus that you visit. Glimmingehus has alwys been know for its ghosts. It is the young maiden who is believed to have been walled in the castle wall, the White lady who rises with the mists from the moat, the ghost carriage drawn by black horses that can be seen in the courtyard, and the little girl in a blue dress that several guests ask about, just to get the anwer that she does not exist…

    Landskrona Citadel

    Citadellet lies in Landskrona. It was built in 1559 by Christian III of Denmark as a defense castle against enemies. It is 230 ft wide and the length is 130 ft. It has cannons around the building.The castle is to be known for the largest and best preserved castles in Europe. In 1658 the Swedish king took over the castle and from that day it has been Swedish. Citadellet used to be a prison, with an old dungeon and a prison tower.  There is a moat around the castle to keep the enemies out. Nowadays Citadellet is owned by Sveriges Fastighetsverk. Parties and guided tours are arranged at the castle, for example a scary ghost tour at halloween.

    Ale's Stones

    Ale's Stones (Ales stenar in Swedish) are an oval stoneship. The stones have been standing there on a cliff as a stoneship for about 1200 to 1500 years. Ale's Stones consists of 59 big stones. The stones can weigh up to 5 tonnes each. The stoneship is 69 meters long and 19 meters wide at the widest point. Ale's Stones has lovely views over the sea and it's a very nice picnic place. There's different theories why the Ale's stones was built, one says that it's a grave monument or a cult center. Another theory is that the Ale's stones is a sun calendar.

    Turning Torso, Malmö

    Turning torso is an skysckraper in Sweden and the tallest building in Scandinavia. Located in Malmö on the Swedish side of the Öresund strait, it was built and is owned by Swedish cooperative association HSB. It is regarded as the first twisted skyscraper in the world.Turning torso is 190 m tall. The construction started February 14, 2001. Turning torso was designed by a Spanish architect called Santiago Calatrava.Turning Torso received approximately 15,000 square meters of apartment space and houses 147 rental apartments. In addition, there are 4,200 square meters of office space, accommodation, sauna area, gym, observation room, banquet hall, wine cellar and office modules that are available for the residents.Turning torso is pretty cool when it is dark. Turning Torso's body turns 90 degrees on its way up. The construction is based on nine cubes with five floors of 400 square meters of living space per floor. The apartments have a high material standard and the building is designed and maintained to maintain a high environmental standard.
