Sifnos.     On the 6th January we celebrate Epithany.

    The tradition is that

a priest, surrounded by people, throws a cross into the sea, either from the harbour or from a boat at sea the minute the cross leaves the priest’s hand, the divers jump into the freezing water to catch the cross. The lucky one who finds and returns the cross is blessed by the priest.

    In Mesopotamia   - Mnemokere

In Mesopotamia, a custom continues today on the eve of the epiphanies performed by our ancestors in Pontus. It is called Mnemokere.
They set the table not for food, but to make a memorial. They placed the iconostasis on the table, put a baking tray full of wheat and placed the candelabra in the middle. Four candles were placed crosswise around the candelabra.
All the members of the family were sitting on their knees around the table. Next to the adults, the children also took a place to experience and continue the tradition.
The head of the family distributed the candles to everyone. With absolute silence and ecstasy, they lit a candle for each deceased. The touching thing is that in the end they lit a candle for the one who had no one in the world to light a candle for him...
