SOBIESKI JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL - WARSAW, POLAND

MÆLA LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL - SKIEN, NORWAY

Hello, everyone! We are a big and internationally diverse group of students of the elective subject "International Cooperation" at Mæla Lower Secondary School. We live in a city called Skien, which is located in the South East of Norway. The world-famous playwright, Henrik Ibsen, was born in Skien.

Mæla is a nice school that stands out a bit from other schools. For instance, we do not have classrooms; instead we have a few large classrooms which we call "bases". 8th, 9th and 10th grade each have their own base. In the bases we are divided into groups, which vary according to the subject. The groups sit in different parts of the base during a lecture, and we have some movable, low walls so that we can`t see what the other groups are doing. At Mæla we also get our own school computers, and we have many choices when it comes to education. This year we stopped using textbooks, and instead we rely on digital resources, for instance a website where our teachers create different types of material. Check out our school here:

    Homepage and Learning resources

We are 28 students in the subject "International Cooperation", but a couple were absent when we took the picture.

Here is the main entrance to our school. There are some more entrances, but this is the biggest one, and the one which most people use. There is a joke about Mæla looking like a prison, but it is actually an example of modern architecture.

This is an image from the outside of the three bases, 8th, 9th and 10th grade. The students in eight grade are to the right, ninth grade is in the middle and tenth grade is to the left.

This our football pitch. Now, when there still is some snow, we play football in the school gym instead.

This is an example of one of the larger classrooms, which we call "bases". There are three of them in all. We have a couple of low and movable walls to separate the groups of pupils attending a lesson, if we need to.

Here it is easier for you to see the partition walls in one of our bases. The poles hanging down from the roof are loading stations for students' laptops. Students take turns tidying up at the end of the day.

This is our school gym. It is quite large, but we can divide it in three, so we don't always use the whole room. We also have the possibilty of turning one third of the gym into a lecture room, where half of the school may fit.

This is a picture from the hall on the ground floor. We can see the main entrance at the end. When we have a break, many students will gather around in groups in this area. There is some art here as well.

We are looking forward to getting to know you and your cities!
