How to photograph snowflakes

  • This project was made by Robert Cobzariu

First of all you need some sort of microscope. I made one with some materials that you can find at your local DIY shop. I used Plexiglas, screws and a wooden plate. The lens comes from a cheap laser. I inserted the lens in the Plexiglas plate. As camera I used my Smartphone which was placed over the lens. The distance between the two plates can be changed with the screws with the purpose of creating clear photos.

Also, if you want you can use a macro lens and attached it to your camera.

I used also a small Plexiglas plate as my snowflakes holder (so the snowflakes melt more slowly). Then I put it outside with the microscope. The ideal temperature is lower than -5°C. I didn't need a lot of snowflakes because I wanted to photograph them separately. On the wooden plate I place a black paper to ensure that the background is black (if you want you don't need to do this).

In the pictures you will find a chart which is about snowflakes category. In my photos I identified three kinds of snowflakes: Dendrites, Needles and Plates.

Please find them in the next photos.
