Demirçelik Secondary School is a public school situated in the public house area of Isdemir Iron and Steel Company. Our school is located on the outskirts of a town called İskenderun which is 20 km far away, an hour away to the Syrian border. It is at the same time in a circle of an industrial area where there are several iron & steel factories and rolling plants. The mass house area is provided by the company to its staff. The houses of the students are very close to the school. The school is particularly built for the children of the factory staff. The students are mainly the children of Isdemir factory, but there are also students whose parents’ are also workers coming from nearby towns by school buses. Because our school isn’t located in the city center, the students have the disadvantage of missing the opportunities of following cultural activities, suh as exhibitions, plays, movies, shows. Therefore, as teachers and as a school, we try to organise these kinds of cultural activities either at school or within the lodging area.
There are 47 teachers and over 666 students in our school. We have two teachers for the SEN (Special Educational Needs) students. The number of SEN students is 9. They are being taught in a special class by two SEN teachers and an assistant. There are 2 SEN students integrated in regular class education. The school building has a Science lab, Music room, Art room, Design room, ICT room, a library and a psychological and speech therapy Office.
