Having officially started the project in December 2020 medical conditions made the first personal meeting possible. It was held on the premises of the coordinating school Kaufmannsschule II in Hagen (D). On the first day they got to know each other with intercultural trainer Dr. Sandhya Küsters who also introduced methods celebrating diversity and facilitating student acitivity with a focus on growth among the group.

Listening is a very important skill in intercultural groups.

We listened to a presentation on racism and other forms of discrimination. Hanna Hittmeyer and Vanessa Schmolke from Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. visited us to tell us about their work looking after graves of victims and prisoners of war. They showed us the traces visible on Remberg Cemetery in Hagen.

Our final day was spent on an excellent guided tour with Reinhard Fromme through Wewelsburg. Wewelsburg was taken by the Schutzstaffel (SS) under Heinrich Himmler as school for a cruel protection force. The exhibition shows the history of the school and biographies of the perpetrators and victims. There was also the concentration camp Niederhagen whose inmates were used to work on the modifications of the castle.

It was very touching for everyone to experience the exhibition, the North Tower and the monument for those who died.

The shape of the monument refers to the badges the prisoners had to wear in different colours to show why they had been interned.
