Earth Day 2021

  • As our project deals with climate change and sustainable consumption we decided to address the Earth Day in every school.

Every year on April 22 Earth Day is traditionally celebrated. This year's theme is "Restore Our Earth". In the times in which we live, it is increasingly necessary to return to our roots, to think of the Earth not only as a place in which we live, but as a home that protects, nourishes and shelters us. Even the smallest step we take would be enough, because it would be in the direction of the right change.

What activities every school carried out you can read and see below.

Bulgaria - Nemska ezikova gimnaziya "Goethe", Burgas

NEG "Goethe", together with the Student Council and the Erasmus + project team "R4 - Making a difference" urged everyone to follow our example by taking part in the various initiatives that will take place in their city, or clean the garden around the block, plant a tree or flower in a pot. And they cleaned their surroudings and planted some trees.

You can find everything about Earth Day and the various initiatives here..

Greece - RALLEIO GENIKO LYKEIO THILEON PEIRAIA, Piraeus

Ralleio organized the collection of recyclable materials at the Recycling Station of Rallio Lyceum.

At the Station they collect batteries, used frying oil, electrical and electronic devices that can not be further repaired, lamps, printers and photocopiers, plastic caps and plastic water bottles in collaboration with Reciprocal Recycling and the Attica Region. The plastic caps are collected in collaboration with the Solidarity Team of Raleio Lyceum in order to obtain wheelchairs for our fellow citizens who need them.

They are also pleased to announce that the use of disposable plastic water bottles by the school community has decreased significantly as more and more teachers and students use reusable or thermos bottles.

Slovenia - Gimnazija Jurija Vege Idrija

The Idrija Youth Center discussed the future with students 1a and 1b. They pointed out the problems in their surroundings and in connection with this researched the goals of sustainable development on the basis of good practices in the local community and where there are still possibilities or opportunities for development and upgrades.
They also pointed out good practices abroad, as they were accompanied by Antoine and Salvador, international volunteers of the Idrija Youth Center.
At the end everyone considered what may be the first step, he or she can do for a better future of our planet.

In German classes students combined environmental protection with grammar of modal verbs.

    Spain, IES TORRELLANO, Torellano

The school starteds a project for the sustainable irrigation of sports fields, through the use of recycled toilet water. The project was presented to the First Lego League competition last Saturday, but we wanted the project to be related to Erasmus + R4MAD, to also contribute to the project and to the commemoration of Earth Day.  The project is written in Spanish, since the students who have done it are 12 years old and their knowledge of English is still not high.

    Sustainable cities for the future

In working with UN goal nr 13 – Climate action, our students have studied the technology of future cities. The students are enrolled in a course that’s called Politics and Sustainable development. As a final assignment they got use all the knowledge from the course in to a project -  How to construct a sustainable city where the focus is to make the transportations, energy, waste management and buildings as climate friendly as possible. After learning about the subject and writing a paper with their detailed plans they also got to be creative. We spend a whole day building models of their cities. The students loved to get creative and their city models are now on display in the school for others to see.
