ABOUT STEP 1
Step 1 is dedicated to literature. Our goal is for collaborating pupils to explore the Sun as a source of inspiration for authors and artists. Collaborating pupils will create interschool working groups to write and illustrate their own original fairytale, using the creative writing technique "fairytale salad".
Guidelines
1. Pupils read the books "The Ray weaver" by Vassiliki Nevrokopli and "Sun bread" by Elisa Kleven.
2. Pupils create their own Sun bread in each collaborating school, using the recipe in the book "Sun bread" .
3. Pupils form interschool working groups (writers & illustrators) and create in collaboration their original fairytale inspired by the 2 books. In their fairytale, pupils will mix characters from the 2 books with the characters they will create.

MAGREE* AND ASTERIS**
(MAlta GREEce)
**(STAR)
Once upon a time there was a creature named Magree, living in a cave. It was all dark there and Magree was afraid of light, because all it knew was the darkness of its cave.
Nearby there was a village. The village was bathed in sunlight. A young girl, Alexandra and her mom, the baker of the village, lived there. Alexandra loved her canary very much, which was called Asteris.
The villagers were very frightened of the cave because they couldn’t see anything there and in their imagination they had created a monster that they believed was living in the cave. Everyone believed that except Asteris. He really wanted to get into the cave and get to know the creature. One day Alexandra pulled Asteris out of the cage for a low flight into the room, as she used to.
As Asteris was flying over the toys, he saw the open window, and with a sharp move he got up and flew out. Alexandra shouted "Asteris, come back!" But Asteris did not even look back. He reached the cave and went in. He started chirping to escape the fear. Magree heard the song and was so moved because it was as if it heard its own voice! Magree chirped back to Asteris and began to approach him. As soon as they met, Asteris was surprised to see a cute little creature instead of a terrible monster.
Asteris started talking to Magree and said “Hello”. Asteris said hello back and asked him what his name was. Magree answered back. Asteris then asked Magree to go out and play with him, but Magree told him about his fear of light. Asteris told him to follow behind him and walk on his shadow. “The shadow will create some darkness” Asteris told Magree. They went on a tree and decided to build a treehouse without windows so that Magree would feel ok. They became friends and spent whole days having picnics in the treehouse. Asteris would tell stories to Magree about the world, the girl he lived with, Alexandra, her mum and the sunlit village. Each day Magree became more curious about the world outside the cave and the treehouse.
In the meantime Alexandra was really worried about her canary Asteris. She looked for him for days but could not find him anywhere. One day she went near the cave were Magree lived and saw Magree and Asteris playing football. She realised that there was no terrible monster in the cave, but only a small creature. She also noticed that he was friendly to Asteris. She decided to go and tell all the village people that there was no monster in the cave and to come and meet him.
Alexandra first spoke to her mom. She told her to send a Sun Latern to the Ray-Weaver and ask for a Sunbeam for Magree: a Sunbeam of emotions to give Magree the strength to try and come to the Light.
Alexandra's mom started kneading Sunbread. She put the dough by the fireplace to expand. As soon as it became expanded and fluffy, Alexandra's mom kneaded it and wrote her message on the Sunbread. While the bread was cooking in the oven, Alexandra's mom opened the windows to let the smell reach the Sun Lanterns.
Chariton, one of the Sun Lanterns, smelled the Sunbread cooking and immediately flew down to Earth and arrived at the baker's house. He got the message and took it to Ray-Weaver. Ray-Weaver went to the Sun workshop and made a heart-shaped sunbeam for Magree.
As Alexandra watched Asteris and Magree play football, suddenly the heartshaped beam reached Magree who became bright like the Sun. He told Asteris "I'm not afraid to leave the darkness anymore!"
Then all the villagers saw Magree and stopped fearing it. They all went to the village together and were happy and cherished.
To celebrate, they went on a trip to the solar system, not with a spaceship but with a spacehouse, and became the world's first explorers!
