Project 'Human Library'

  • The Town Council of Valongo has brought to our school some slightly different “BOOKS” to show to the 9th grade students, within the scope of “A Project for an Education based on Values” and with the motto “ Do not judge the book by its cover”.

The 9th grade students had the opportunity to dialogue with these “books” (people) who represented groups, target of social discrimination or exclusion. They shared with us their experience and clarified some doubts. The main purpose of this dialogue was to reduce prejudice, to make us aware of the importance of Human Rights and to promote a European Citizenship open to the world.

At our school’s library was held the project ‘Human Library’ where we had the oportunity to listen to people’s stories about their lives. The project Erasmus+, ‘Same But Different’, is related to this activity because neither our personality nor our appearance make us superior or inferior in comparison to other people.

The ‘Human Library’ has a connection with Erasmus+. The Erasmus+ subject is ‘Same but Different’ that means we are all the same but different. In the ‘Human Library’, I could hear and know about the story of each person, but all of them different. All of us, have the same rights and duties, so we are considered equal, but each one of us has different life stories. Erasmus+ is a school exchange, where we can establish connections with other people and learn more about new customs. This also happens in the ‘Human Library’.

Just like in the ‘Human Library’ some people tell us about their stories, in the Erasmus+ programme we will tell our story because all the stories and words find themselves in one page that will be portrayed in a book. The book of our life.
