The basis of our modern democracies - Erasmus+ Project 2019-2020

  • Escaut high school has about 1200 pupils. Who are from diverse social backgrounds : 30% of the students benefit from scholarships. Our high school develops a number of actions in favor of integration, success and ambition. It encourages the cultural awareness amongst thanks to the curriculum, and through the partnership with the Phénix Theatre, scène Nationale and the museum of Valenciennes or in the clubs available at school. Our high school is located in a cross-border area at the crossroads of Europe and offers the English euro option in history and physics and chemistry,
technology is taught in English for students who specialize in technological subject.
Yet despite these advantages, and their abilities, our students' ambitions are limited both in their choice for further studies or and in their reluctance to leave the area. That’s why we are hope to give our students the opportunity of a European perspective. This project is now official and is included in our « high school's project ». We expect that the collaboration provided by this Erasmus + project will enable our students to enhance their basic skills such as foreign language(s), history, and also their transversal skills such as argumentation, discussion, autonomy, digital skills. We consider that this project can significantly improve the self-esteem of our students and help them reach greater opportunities.
Our project involves 12 14-16 year old students per high school. The three schools are committed to this project being inclusive. We consider that one of the most important issues of education is to teach students to be responsible members of society, so we are really focused on the question of equality in a context of social or gender diversity. In addition, for Escaut high school the students involved in the mobilities will reflect the social mixity of our high school : at least 30% of the students benefit from a   scholarship. Similarly, the TFG of Düsseldorf welcomes migrants or refugees students
and aims to promote their integration into the high school, and also into German society. The LLG of Vesprèm is concerned with the topic of inclusion in view of the debate in Hungarian society concerning immigration. Moreover, the three institutions have a common objective : to consider "the basis of our modern democracies" from different national contexts and histories. This task will strengthen values such as human rights, and discussion rather than resorting to violence, and the recognition of a diversity of values.
Pedagogical aspects : learning foreign languages will benefit from immersive sessions either real or virtual, this will help the students to consider the intercultural aspects of communication. Furthermore, the LLG will bring its expertise in the fields of foreign language and digital skills. Our digital referee is a promoter of digital innovations devoted to education, he participates in  international conferences. Yet, information or even courses are not enough to change our practices.
A European project will be an opportunity to adopt new teaching skills, especially in a context of the reform of the French baccalauréat.
The TFG is involved in many partnerships with France, Spain, Israel, while The LLG and Escaut high school are inaugurating their foreign exchange programs. One of the purposes of this project is to set up an international collaboration concerning every aspect of the project : the pedagogical aspects, the topics, the resources, the tasks, the assessment. In fact, a member of the French team was given the opportunity to spend three days in the TFG ; these observations made in February 2019 will lead to mutual enrichment and the evolution of our practices, and will be a stimulating experience for the students involved. That’s why we will set up 4 small international groups of 9 students. They will be supervised by an international multidisciplinary team. The topics identified will require transversal and international approaches. The pupils who are not involved in the mobilities will be associated with the project through specific tasks linked to the curriculum. This project results from two etwinning projects. Then, during the Erasmsus + project we will be able with etwinning to communicate, to provide students with documents, to present the calendar of the tasks and to check the progression of the students’ work, and to give some advice. Etwinning will also be useful for the assessment and the diffusion of the project. Finally, we will make a  summary to share our experience in order to inspire and help teachers in our high schools and elsewhere. The success of this project will lead to a « European development plan ».
