    WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION – ARE WE GIVING ENOUGH OPPORTUNITY FOR PUPILS TO PARTICIPATE?

    ICLAL LAWRENCE, TOLLGATE PRIMARY SCHOOL

This interactive workshop will explore in pairs / groups how children in their schools take part in the decision marking and look at if there are any ideas that can be shared within the group or is it that there is a lack of pupil voices? The workshop leader will explore how pupils in Europe (e.g. Sweden and Finland) involve their pupils in the decision making about their studies and styles of teaching and learning. The workshop will also explore if pupils in other countries across Europe have more of a voice than those in the UK. There will be a discussion around this topic and also around how we can involve pupils more in school life and use eTwinning to create projects focused around their experiences and ideas rather than teachers from the partnership deciding on the project.

MY WINSTON CHURCHILL FELLOWSHIP; ENGAGING GIRLS IN STE(A)M CAREERS THROUGH INNOVATION AND PROBLEM SOLVING

    ELAINE MANTON, LORETO GRAMMAR SCHOOL

This workshop will discuss the aims and objectives of Elaine’s Churchill Fellowship; where Elaine went and Elaine’s findings. This will be an opportunity to understand the application process and the wealth of opportunities available from the Winston Churchill Fellowship Programme. There is overwhelming evidence that the UK's digital sector is critical to its economic growth. Travelling to the countries recognised as leading the way in STE(A)M and Vocational Education and Training (VET) will allow the UK to develop students' skills to make them better digital citizens, workers, makers, entrepreneurs and gamers to enhance their employability and to help them become economically active. These important digital and entrepreneurial skills are currently being developed in Loreto Grammar School. Elaine’s project will address open and innovative practices in a digital era with a focus on inspiring girls into STE(A)M careers. The innovative nature of the project is that it will focus on new approaches to coding and robotics while also addressing engineering and digital skills gaps within the UK and foster innovation, which ultimately drives economic growth.

TEACHING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS ACROSS THE CIRRICULUM

    SUZI BEWELL, THE MINSTER SCHOOL

During this workshop, Suzi will share with participants a project based out of Leeds Development Education Centre, which has as its aim to help secondary teachers of Languages (French, Spanish, German), Maths and Religious Education to deliver high quality teaching around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.  Suzi will present the project work to date and delegates will leave with links to many ready to use and teach materials. This workshop will provide a greater awareness of what the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are and how they can be easily implemented into existing Schemes of Work, thanks to these high quality resources.

    STUDENT DIGITAL AMBASSADORS

MARKELLA AFENTI-SASSIS, LITTLE HADHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL AND DEREK HARKNESS, CONTROLLED SCHOOLS’ SUPPORT COUNCIL

The workshop will focus on building eTwinning projects in a primary school setting with student participation and the centre of the project and pupil autonomy. This will be an informative workshop with a general overview of the ICT ambassadors within Markella and Derek’s school and examples will be provided of how the digital ambassadors are involved within the school. There will also be time to explore the examples and top tips on how schools can set up something similar. This workshop will be beneficial in demonstrating how ICT ambassadors can help with pupil engagement and leadership within eTwinning projects and how there can be more eTwinning projects involving pupils. There will be ideas for collaborative work and examples will be shared and discussed on how Digital ambassadors can lead projects and support the teachers and younger children in the school to participate in eTwinning projects and to use TwinSpace safely.

HOW TO CULTIVATE A ‘QUESTIONING CLASSROOM’

    PETER WORLEY, PHILOSOPHY FOUNDATION

This workshop will demonstrate some central principles and techniques while facilitating discussion around questions such as 'What is a questioning classroom?' The ideas will be taken from Peter Worley’s new book ‘100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Questioning' and they will include the central idea Open Questioning Mindset where the message is that the most important thing to change in your classroom is your mindset. This workshop will also explore some question techniques that, once your mindset is right, will help to create a questioning classroom, such as how to embrace aporia, an ancient Greek term that captures experiences and encounters that include confusion, perplexity, frustration, boredom, ambiguity, inconclusively and uncertainty; how to cultivate trust and proper accountability; how to give the pupils voice expression but while also balancing this with responsible use of one's voice (often overlooked these days). Everything has been developed over the past 20 years of in-classroom practice. Participants will be able to take away some useful questioning types and distinctions (such as two very helpful types of open and closed question), questioning strategies 'If-ing, anchoring and opening up' to help teachers bring deeper evaluation from their pupils. But, more importantly, participants will also learn some central principles that enable the techniques and strategies to be properly implemented.

USING STOP-MOTION ANIMATION IN YOUR CLASSROOM

VIOLETA KORKUCYTE, SOUTH ACTON CHILDREN'S CENTRE

This informative workshop will firstly explain the process of making a stop-motion animation starting with making storyboards/scenery/characters and creating a script for an animation. Examples of storyboards and characters made by the children will be shown. Violeta will also share some animations made by my pupils to cover different areas of learning and curriculum. This workshop will also include a demonstration on how to use digital stop-motion animation software, namely Monkey Jam, to create a stop-motion animation using Lego/toys/objects, models from plasticine/clay, cut outs from magazines and children's drawings/paintings. Film is a powerful art form and medium for engaging young people, and for sharing and building inter-cultural understanding. This workshop will equip teachers with approaches to getting the most out of film in a modern language, literacy, and art-historical context, with practical examples and suggestions for resources.

USING SKYPE IN THE CLASSROOM TO ENHANCE INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

KATE KEAVENY, ALL SAINTS CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

The workshop will introduce participants to the different ways in which Skype can be used: mystery Skype games, virtual field trips and guest speakers. Participants will learn how to access and book Skype sessions, collect Skype miles and badges and connect with others. Finally, participants will develop an understanding of how this could be used in an existing project or how to use it to begin a new project. Participants will know how to register on the Microsoft educator community to access the range of Skype sessions and book them. They will know how to play Mystery Skype (country, animal, number) Participants will know how to incorporate Skype into existing projects, create a new project based on a shared virtual field trip or a Skype collaboration and have ideas for possible projects.

    GIVING BILINGUAL LEARNERS A VOICE

    KIRSTEN BARRETT, EAL SERVICE GLASGOW

This workshop will look at some theory, myths and misconceptions of EAL learners. This workshop will share parts of various projects where bilingual learners have been able to share their voice and ideas. The aim is to then hear from the bilingual learners and find out the impact eTwinning has had on them. There will be a discussion about how eTwinning promotes the development of language and use some digital tools to compile ideas and share how eTwinning can be used to give bilingual learners a voice.

PROMOTING ETWINNING THROUGH BYOD PODCASTING WITH ANCHOR

    JOE DALE, INDEPENDENT LANGUAGES CONSULTANT

The entry level for podcasting has become so low now that all you need is a mobile phone and Internet connection to get started. The idea of this workshop is to demonstrate how to make a collaborative podcast to promote eTwinning and pupil voice and distribute it to all the major podcasting platforms for free using the web tool and app Anchor. I will show how to create an account and go through all the different ways delegates can build an episode including adding transitions, music and voice messages. Delegates will have the opportunity to script and record their contributions to the episode using which ever device they have at hand and we will publish the results on Anchor. By using a cross-platform app, my aim is to illustrate how podcasting can promote democratic participation as well as citizenship, critical thinking and active participation. Participants will learn all the practical steps required to create a collaborative podcast with their eTwinning partners showcasing their project through their own voices. They will see how podcasting can build confidence and fluency in learners as well as encourage democratic participation using any device connected to the Internet in a moderated environment.

SELF ORGANISED LEARNING METHODOLOGY TO ENHANCE CLASSROOM PRACTICE

ANNE JAKINS, NICK FALK AND LESLEY ATKINS

The work of Sugata Mitra provides the theory behind this workshop which will enable participants to use the SOLE methodology to enhance classroom practice. Working in a Self Organised Learning Environment students use 'Big Questions' to explore new concepts, enhance understanding, measure progress and develop collaborative working skills. Some of our evidence is Mathematics and Science based but it will be made clear that this methodology is cross phase and suitable for all areas of the curriculum. Following the workshop, the expectation is that participants will be fully equipped to use this methodology to enhance learning in the classroom. This process is flexible, can form the basis of international partnerships and can be used to develop 'soft skills' as well as subject understanding. This SOLE methodology can be used to introduce a new concept, extend working practice and evaluate progress. Participants will be able to formulate Big Questions and confidently structure a lesson to enable students to organise their own learning environment. This workshop will give participants a new style of working in the classroom.

BREAKING DOWN COMMUNICATION BARRIERS USING MUSIC AND MAKATON

    SHARON TONNER-SAUNDERS, UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEE
