Biodiversity starts with a Bee

  • Biodiversity starts with a …Bee

Honey bee colony losses are being observed worldwide. Scientists estimate that survival of over 80% of plant species depend directly on pollinating insects, and more specifically on bees. Any major decline of the pollinating insects’ population would therefore have a dramatic impact on biodiversity and related economic activities. Because they are sensitive to their environment, bees are also considered as major “bio-indicators”, which makes it relevant to see them as an emblem for biodiversity. Preserving bees will therefore benefit all kinds of pollinating insects, animals and people.

Through the symbol of bees, the one of the goals of this project is to develop awareness among our students abould the importance of bees and seeking strategies to maintain, preserve and favour biodiversity.

The next time you see a bee buzzing around, remember…

…that a third of our food crops are pollinated by bees and other insects. Up to 90% of all wild plants exist thanks to bees and other pollinating insects.

Bees: Champions for food security and protecting our biodiversity.

Pollinating insects contribute to agricultural production in 150 (84%) European crops. These crops depend partly or entirely upon insects for their pollination.

Honey bee colony losses are being observed worldwide, which is raising great ecological and economic concern. Declines in managed pollinators, such as honeybees, and wild pollinator such bumblebees, solitary bees and hoverflies, are therefore of growing concern as we need to protect food production and the maintain wildflower diversity. There is increasing evidence that honeybee numbers are insufficient in many parts of Europe to provide adequate pollination services, and so more wild pollinators are needed.

Because they are sensitive to their environment, bees are considered as major “bio-indicators”, which makes them an symbol for biodiversity.

Preserving bees will therefore benefit all kinds of pollinating insects, animals and people.
