Learning about animals in danger in the UK.

The children at Whitehouse Common have been doing some research about animals that are endangered in the United Kingdom. They were quite surprised that there are so many animals in danger of extinction here, and also at some of the animals.

They used the following sites to find out their information.

10 of the most endangered species in Britain.

One in five British mammals at risk of extinction.

Fifth of Britain's wild mammals 'at high risk of extinction'

    British mammals' fight for survival

    Mammal Society Red List

They discovered that some animals that they thought were quite safe like the hedgehog are actually in danger as their numbers are declining. They'd never heard of some of the animals and were very surprised that there were red squirrels as few of them ahd seen one. Señora Stevens told them that there were lots when she was little but that the grey squirrels as well as squirrel pox had made them very endangered.

(They also looked at the findings of other schools and were amused that there was an animal in Spanish called a lisa - because that's Señroa Stevens' name!)
